GIA Celebrates 10 Years of Support for Plan International’s Efforts to Raise Girl’s Rights

Global Intelligence Alliance (GIA) celebrates its tenth year of supporting Plan International, as part of its corporate social responsibility program. GIA’s involvement with Plan began in February 2005 through its corporate headquarters in Finland, and comprises financial donations, a child sponsorship, as well as organizing different kinds of staff volunteer projects that support girls from developing countries who are sponsored by Plan’s “Because I am a Girl” campaign.

Founded over 75 years ago, Plan is one of the oldest and largest children's development organizations in the world. Its work extends across 50 developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Plan’s “Because I am a Girl” campaign aims to support millions of girls to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them. Following an extensive "Because I am a girl" campaign by Plan, the United Nations declared October 11 as ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ In 2011.

Plan estimates that across the world, 62 million girls are denied their right to an education. Every day, girls are taken out of school, married young, and subjected to violence in school. Plan’s global “Because I am a Girl” campaign aims to support millions of girls to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them.

With the support of GIA and various other corporate partners in Finland, as well as institutional funding from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the European Commission, Plan Finland supported 24 projects in 15 countries in 2013. All in all these projects reached 77,000 girls, 58,000 boys and a total of 750,000 persons.

“We at GIA have worked together with Plan International for many years now. Contributing to the “Because I’m a Girl” campaign by Plan is something that is close to our hearts, as GIA highly values diversity and equal opportunity amongst our people. Additionally, this campaign provides hope and opportunities for some of the most unprivileged people in our world. We trust these efforts will have a lasting positive impact for the societies they live in”, said Markko Vaarnas, CEO, Global Intelligence Alliance.
