Doppler Velocity Log is a water velocity measuring device. DVL is a sensor for subsea navigation where satellite reception like GPS is not available. A DVL simply monitors speed over a vehicle's bottom by delivering pings at a predetermined frequency from four transceivers. The frequency change from the sound reflects on the bottom of the transducer is utilized to determine the speed over the bottom or vehicle speed reference to the bottom.
In addition, the time between pings is utilized to estimate the distance travelled when pings are dispatched and received.
