Berlin Heart employees cook for families at the Ronald McDonald

In the afternoon of July, 31st 2014 ten Berlin Heart employees gathered at the Ronald McDonald House in Berlin-Wedding to prepare a three-course-menu for the residents. That night mache with chanterelle and caramelized walnuts followed by coq au vin and a peach and raspberry crumble with pistachios and vanilla ice cream as desert were on the menu. The aim of the volunteers was not only to serve a delicious dinner to the approximately 40 guests in the Ronald McDonald House. The event also intended to give the families the chance to relax in a nice atmosphere despite the demanding daily life with a sick child.

It was a rewarding night for the Berlin Heart team, too: “The initial worries whether everything will turn out well and whether we will fulfill the parent’s expectations luckily disappeared after the warm welcome. It was a great experience to cook with colleagues, whom one sees not often otherwise”, says a Berlin Heart product manager.

The McDonald’s foundation operates special facilities near big clinics to support families of sick children during the child’s therapy. This allows children to be cared for under the best available medical care while the family or, at times the children themselves, are housed close to the clinic. The first Ronald McDonald houses were built in the mid-1970s in the USA. Today there are 324 houses in existence located worldwide in 57 different countries, Germany alone housing 19. The Ronald McDonald house in Berlin-Wedding is with 34 apartments the biggest of its kind in Germany.

In January another Berlin Heart team renovated two apartments in the same Ronald McDonald house. The former EXCOR® Pediatric patient Romy-Charlott and her mother have previously found a temporary home in one of them. Romy-Charlott’s mother participated in the renovation activity and expressed her gratitude for the voluntary effort.

We would like to thank the Ronald McDonald houses worldwide for supporting families and also our patients.
