Springer Science+Business Media streamlines with DataVard its SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse

Housekeeping at the push of a button, frees up 25 percent of Database space

Heidelberg (Germany), August 13, 2014 – Specialist publishing group Springer Science+Business Media reduced by a quarter, the size of its global SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse solution and improved the loading performance. The fact that long loading times had affected the day-to-day business and the intended migration to the SAP HANA® platform, made it necessary to reduce the database size. The software and consulting company DataVard had identified a considerable potential for optimization and assisted the data cleansing with the help of the DataVard housekeeping module ERNA.

Springer Science+Business Media is an international leader in specialist publishing, with a registered office in Luxembourg and operational office in Berlin. Approximately 3.000 users from differing divisions, utilized SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse solution for reporting and analysis. The long loading times of the Business Intelligence application meant that the results were seldom available before the early morning. Preparing for the future operation of SAP HANA® platform, the system size also represented a significant cost factor.

To improve the loading performance and to be better positioned for the later migration to SAP HANA® platform, Springer Science+Business Media decided to use the application DataVard housekeeping module ERNA. This solution developed by DataVard, automates and controls the handling of temporary data in SAP systems. ERNA's central cockpit provides transparency on the conducted housekeeping measures, while providing provisions for data deletion and controls for the automation of future measures to improve performance.

DataVard initially performed a system analysis using their software tool DataVard BW Fitness Test. “Our analysis showed, that 1,308 GB of temporary data and logs blocked nearly half of the system size”, says DataVard’s managing director Gregor Stoeckler. “This data significantly slowed the system down.” DataVard also identified considerable potential for optimization with regards to Cube Compression and the deletion of various Logs. In order to automate future data cleansing for Springer Science+Business Media, DataVard's IT specialists installed the housekeeping module ERNA.

As a result the clearance of unnecessary data was a major success: With the help of ERNA, 750 GB of superfluous data has now been deleted. “We are very impressed, how fast we achieved effective results“, says Matthias Kicherer, Head of Business Intelligence, IT Controlling and End User Support at Springer Science+Business Media. „And the functionalities of the application are also convincing. With the ERNA cockpit we always have a good overview of where we stand. This makes communication much easier.” Another positive aspect was the minor effort required to operate the tool. Housekeeping now only requires one workday per month. In the past, the cleaning activities were more extensive, the process chains for these activities had to be developed first. This led to less housekeeping activities due the lack of time and transparency.

“With the help of ERNA we were able to substantially reduce the effort for data cleansing within our Business Warehouse, with minimum effort and realizing savings of 25 percent of the system’s size. Thus we are now well prepared for future challenges like SAP HANA®,” resumes Matthias Kicherer.
