Tom Melsheimer of Fish & Richardson Named 2014 Dallas Bar Association Trial Lawyer of the Year

DALLAS – Noted Dallas attorney Thomas M. Melsheimer of Fish & Richardson has been named the 2014 Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Dallas Bar Association (DBA) based on his work in civil trials throughout Texas and across the United States. He is the youngest attorney to win the award since the DBA was founded in 1873.

Mr. Melsheimer will be recognized at the DBA Trial Lawyer of the Year dinner during the annual Dallas Bench/Bar Conference on Oct. 23 at the Horseshoe Bay Marriott in the Texas Hill Country.

“It is a humbling honor to be recognized alongside so many of my fellow Dallas Bar members whose work I’ve admired for years,” says Mr. Melsheimer, managing principal of Fish’s Dallas office. “The success I've had is the result of having the good judgment to pick talented partners and colleagues.”

The annual award recognizes a lawyer’s skill, integrity and record of achievement. Prior honorees include such notable attorneys as Frank Branson of The Law Offices of Frank L. Branson; Mike McKool of McKool Smith; and Mark Werbner of Sayles Werbner.

Mr. Melsheimer served as lead trial counsel for Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire Mark Cuban in the country’s highest-profile insider-trading case last year. Following a hard-fought trial against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Melsheimer won a unanimous jury verdict completely clearing Mr. Cuban of all claims.

In 2012, Mr. Melsheimer worked alongside the Texas Attorney General’s Office to win a $158 million settlement against pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson over marketing tactics for the controversial pain medication Risperdal. It was the year’s second-largest settlement in Texas and the largest Medicaid fraud settlement in state history, earning Fish a spot among the Litigation Departments of the Year in Texas Lawyer newspaper.
