Small is big for the economy: Michigan business associations celebrate National Small Business Week May 12-16
Michigan’s small businesses have a big impact on the state’s economy, according to the Michigan Business and Professional Association (MBPA) and its sister association, the Michigan Food and Beverage Association (MFBA) as it joins the U.S. Small Business Administration in celebrating National Small Business Week, which takes place May 12-16.Jennifer Kluge, president of both associations, said today that its member companies impact more than 150,000 businesses statewide – or approximately one-third of all Michigan firms. “Small Business Week focuses on the importance of small businesses as pioneers and job creators. Our small businesses generate two out of every three new jobs, and half of America’s workers own or work for a small business,” according to Kluge. She noted a report by The Mercadien Group of Princeton, N.J. which describes small businesses as being responsible for 64% of the nation’s new job growth over the past 15 years.
“We ask that our fellow Michiganders join us this coming week; as well as throughout the year; by shopping at or dining out at our state’s smaller establishments,” Kluge said. “Supporting your local small business means supporting Michigan’s economy and enhancing job growth.”
Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.
The Michigan Business and Professional Association boasts a statewide sphere of influence that no other organization of its kind can claim, leveraging a depth of programs and community initiatives that positively impact more than 150,000 businesses. Learn more at www.michbusiness.org .
The Michigan Food and Beverage Association is a trade organization that represents over 3,500 members who employ over 60,000 persons throughout the State of Michigan.
