The gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology from Shell produces high-quality liquid goods from natural gas instead of crude oil. Motor oils, process oils, and the components for items used on a daily basis like detergents and cosmetics are among these goods. Transportation fuels (such as diesel and aviation fuel) are also included. (1) GTL products lack colour, odour, and practically all of the contaminants found in crude oil, such as sulphur, aromatics, and nitrogen-containing compounds. The types and quantities of fuels and nonfuel products that can be produced utilising GTL technology are highly flexible. The steps in the current GTL process are as follows: (1) turning natural gas into synthesis gas, which is a mixture of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO); (2) Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which is the conversion of natural gas into hydrogen (H2); highly paraffinic wax from synthesis gas; and (3) upgrading of Fischer.

Natural gas is transformed into a heavier hydrocarbon liquid and transmitted to consumers through gas-to-liquids (GTL) transport systems. Natural gas to liquid conversion technique is not new. Using an appropriate catalyst technology, methane and steam are combined in the first phase and converted to syngas or synthetic gas, which is composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (Keshav and Basu, 2007). The Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process (in the presence of a catalyst) or an oxygenation technique is then used to transform the syngas into a liquid (mixing syngas with oxygen in the presence of a suitable catalyst). The liquid that is produced can be a fuel, typically a clean-burning motor fuel (syncrude), a lubricant, ammonia, methanol, a substitute for LPG, or some other liquid.
