Cooking amongst Thai Gen Z is on the up… and the more the merrier!

Bangkok, December 7, 2022: According to the fourth annual World Cooking Index by Cookpad and Gallup, which surveyed people in Thailand, on average, Thais are cooking 6.6 freshly-prepared meals at home each week. This trend has been linked to a cheaper, healthier and more sustainable diet. To live better and save money, cooking more meals at home is a great place to start!

It is young Thai people who are turning to cooking more each year. Thai Gen Z's cook 6.4 weekly meals, significantly higher than the global average of 5.3 for the same age group.

Gen Z's in Thailand are the fastest growing age group in home cooking. Moreover, Thai Gen Z cooks more than other Gen Z in neighboring countries, in ascending order, Singapore at 2.4 meals per week, Hong Kong at 2.9, Taiwan at 3.7, Japan at 4.1, Myanmar at 4.8, Cambodia at 5.5 and Thai Gen Z is cooking at a whopping 6.4 times per week.

Sutthikarn Srisavittiyakorn, Thailand Country Manager of recipe sharing platform Cookpad, comments, "Thai Gen Z are cooking 4 x more meals per week than those the same age in Singapore, and globally 20% more than the Gen Z average. 1. ไข่ตุ๋นวุ้นเส้น It's a steamed recipe with no risk of burning. And it becomes more interesting when vermicelli is added.
2. กล้วยบวดชีง่ายมาก One of the most popular Thai desserts among Generation Z. The name of the recipe implies that it is simple to cook and requires few ingredients.
3. ข้าวผัดปลากระป๋อง Easy fried rice recipe for beginners because the sauce in canned fish has a satisfying taste, so they don't need to add much seasoning.
4. ไก่ย่าง หม้อทอดไร้น้ำมัน It's an effortless but delicious recipe. Simply marinate everything and place it in the air fryer, which is very convenient.
5. ชูม่อกผับ (ข้าวปั้นเกาหลี) Easy and trendy recipe among generation Z due to K-POP trend. Ingredients are very easy to find. Just mixing everything together and then forming into round balls


Methodology:
Gallup and Cookpad measure the frequency of cooking by asking respondents to count the number of meals that they have personally cooked at home in the past 7 days - including lunch and then dinner. Respondents receive the following definition: "By 'cooking at home'; I mean a meal prepared AT HOME from ingredients such as vegetables, meats, grains or other ingredients. Please do not think about pre-made foods or leftovers that you reheat."

This survey was included as a module within the Gallup World Poll in 2021. Since 2005, the World Poll has regularly surveyed people in more than 160 countries using mixed methods of telephone and face-to-face interviewing. In a typical year, the poll results represent more than 95% of the world's population aged 15 and older, using randomly selected, nationally representative samples.
