Harmonising the Collective Responsibility for A Better Delhi

Gone are the days when we saw spit-stained footpaths. The streets of Delhi are being revamped as per European standards by the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi. These stretches are enhancing the city's aesthetics and witnessing increased public engagement due to attractive installations. Thus, it becomes imperative to maintain the aesthetics and safeguard these spaces and amenities.

Aiming to improve people's awareness of public spaces, PWD initiated ROSE (Responsible Ownership of Street spaces for Enjoyment). This unique community involvement programme is aimed at bringing a sense of collective responsibility to preserve our surroundings. Under this initiative, two stretches - Moti Bagh and Pitampura - were selected to raise awareness.

As part of the awareness programme, a street play was organised by Amar Nath Nukkad Natak Team at the two stretches. Themed 'Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat' the troupe performed an engaging skit conveying the message on how a poorly maintained neighbourhood not only promotes social disharmony but discourages healthy living conditions and space for recreational activity.

The play also focused on various problems that unsanitary conditions give birth to. The group conveyed the message that in our mundane life, we usually overlook our responsibility towards keeping public areas clean. Public infrastructure is a product of the taxes we pay to the government, and thus the onus to maintain it also lies on the public.

The event saw an overwhelming response from people of all age groups. More than 100 residents, including children, students, and senior citizens, gathered and enjoyed the musical show and street play. Amit Dubey, Chief Engineer of PWD, also attended the event.

"I thoroughly enjoyed both the musical show and the street play. This was the first time such an event near the place of my residence. It made me realise the importance of keeping our surroundings clean and protecting public property", said Jahanvi Gupta, a resident in Pitampura.

Moreover, among a range of activities planned, the initiative also seeks to identify and provide local budding artists with a platform while promoting the onus of ownership among the residents. As a part of the event, guitarist Indrajeet sang a medley of songs and enthralled the audience before the street play performance. PWD seeks to expand such engaging activities besides continuing with the beautification and maintenance. These activities will consider people from all age groups - from children to senior citizens.

It can be mentioned that PWD, with an objective of increased public participation, has planned to engage the residents by organising more such interactive activities in future. The vision behind such an initiative is to bring behavioural changes and a sense of responsibility among the community. This is slated to increase neighbourhood awareness and is set to reduce maintenance costs on public amenities and help enhance human exchanges on street.
