Colorful Europe: Ceresana Publishes New Market Study on Paints and Varnishes
Growth Motors in the East and West
The positive growth rates are reflecting the general economic upturn. As public investment and private consumption increase, Ceresana expects a rising demand for paints and varnishes. The most important sales market is Germany; due to its size and economic power, this country is the growth motor of the European paints and varnishes industry. Eastern Europe is playing an important role as well: Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana, expects "demand to increase at dynamic growth rates of 4.2% p.a. during the next eight years". Especially Russia, Poland, and Turkey will profit from increasing domestic consumption. A relocation of production from Western to Eastern Europe can be observed in the automotive industry in particular.
Construction Having Tail Winds
In the aftermath of the economic crisis hitting in 2008/09, the economic situation of European countries drifted apart significantly. In order to overcome the crisis, all countries invested in their domestic economic potential. Given the high public debt in some EU member states, e.g. Greece, Spain, and Italy, there is an only limited scope for public stimulus packages in these countries. The remaining countries, on the other hand, are able to support flagging sectors by investing. In order to support the economic upturn, many countries are investing in the construction sector in particular as this segment is accounting for almost 60% of total consumption. Demand for house and wall paints utilized in residential construction will rise, especially in populous countries. Large-scale projects in industrial construction and infrastructure will support the positive development of paints and varnishes revenues even further.
Countries With High Wage Levels Feel the Need to Innovate
Manufacturers of paints and varnishes in countries with a high wage level are dependent on innovations. Thus, Western European companies enjoy the advantage of advanced technology over their competition. The increased focus on sustainability and environmental protection in Western Europe causes consumption to move to waterborne paints and varnishes as well as other environmentally friendly alternatives. Due to high export ratios, many Eastern European producers are also shifting to the manufacturing of environmentally friendly products, which contain only small amounts of solvents or none at all.
