Sangam University Bhilwara VC Talk on National Youth Day Birla Shishu Vihar Pilani Rajasthan

In the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "Youth are a transformative force; they are creative, resourceful and enthusiastic agents of change be it in public squares or cyberspace."

India celebrates the birthday of Swami Vivekananda who was born on 12 January 1863 every year as National Youth Day and 2014 is special as it marked the conclusion of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the iconic spiritual leader. The relevance of Vivekananda for an educational institution is best understood by Swamiji's quote "We want that Education, by which Character is formed, Strength of Mind is increased, the Intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet." To mark the occasion, Prof BR Natarajan President – Vice Chancellor Sangam University gave a talk to the students of Birla Shishu Vihar Pilani on 12 January 2014 and highlighted the following.

While youth broadly is the life span between childhood and adulthood, there are different age group definitions for same worldwide: UN 15-24, WHO 15-34, G20 19-25, China 15-29, USA 16-34, Australia 15-24. Until recently India had put age group 13-35 as youth and the Draft Youth Policy 2012 has redefined it as age 16-30. As per the new policy, for age group 16-20 the focus would be on education, for age group 20-25 focus on employment and age group 25-30 focus would be on entrepreneurship. Youth can undoubtedly be change makers in thrust areas like promotion of national values, social harmony, national unity, education, health, sports and recreation, gender justice, participation in community service, environment and climate change issues, local government etc.

The students gave a loud applause when Mr Girish Pant introduced Prof Natarajan as a well known alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology and Science – BITS Pilani. The students were pleasantly surprised when Prof Natarajan disclosed that his daughter Pooja had also been an alumnus of their school. Thanking Mrs Dimri Principal of the school for giving an opportunity to address the students, Prof Natarajan also gave tips on mind power, time management etc to the students appearing in Board Examinations in March 2014 and advised them to be dreamers, performers and glory achievers to further raise the reputation of their Alma mater.
