Multidimensional Digital Competence Results from the bidt-SZ Digital Barometer
Released today in HANSER publishing, the eBook: "Multidimensional Digital Competence Self-assessment - Results from the bidt-SZ Digitalbarometer" by Dirk von Gehlen, Director Thinktank SZ Institut /Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Dr. Roland A. Stürz, Head of Think Tank, Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt ). This eBook is also available as a chapter in the new book "Digital Competence and Future Skills" from award-winning digital skills expert and publishing editor Dr. Philipp Ramin, CEO of i40.deTo examine the status quo of digital transformation and its challenges and provide a solid database of strengths and weaknesses in the areas of usage behavior of digital devices and technologies, digital competencies, digital transformation of the world of work, e-government, and artificial intelligence , the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt) and the SZ Institute of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany's renowned largest broadsheet newspaper, jointly launched the bidt-SZ-Digitalbarometer. Data was collected from people aged 14 and over and living in Germany in the form of a self-assessment test of digital competencies based on DigCompSAT and the European Digital Competence Framework.
The results of the bidt-SZ Digitalbarometer revealed significant competence gaps in essential areas of digitalization and uncovered specific groups of people that are being left behind. This eBook takes a closer look at the results, which reveal for example that approximately half of the working population sees deficits in the offering of continued or vocational education for digitalization and that nearly every tenth person in Germany only has low and therefore insufficient digital competence when it comes to information and data competency.
"In order to maintain the competitiveness of Germany's SME sector in the long term, the deficits in continuing education and training should be reduced, both in private life areas and in companies. First and foremost, there is a need for a reduction in the complexity of the German continuing education and training landscape and simpler, unbureaucratic support mechanisms for the relevant target groups." Dr. Roland A. Stürz, Head of Think Tank, bidt - Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation
"In order to participate in the digital world, in which we all now live, everyone needs sufficient access to the necessary technical devices and infrastructure, but more than that they need the appropriate skills and competences in dealing with digital technologies. Digital skills go far beyond purely functional skills in using information and communication technologies. It will take a major effort by society, as a whole, to counteract these developments and to ensure that as few people as possible in Germany are left behind in the digital world." Dirk von Gehlen, Director Think Tank, SZ Institut/Süddeutsche Zeitung.
"Digital inclusion is not just nice to have. It is a prerequisite for equal participation in a developed digital society. But more than that, it is also an innovation engine that keeps economies and education systems competitive. The bidt-SZ Digital Barometer is an important step in allowing people to measure their own digital skills, while at the same time revealing the obvious action points for upskilling digital competence of all citizens. In their eBook, Dr. Roland A. Stürz and Dirk von Gehlen have uncovered critical action points for increasing digital and data competency. With the data and results collected here, attractive learning programs can be developed that directly address those with missing skills. It really is more than time to close the gap. We are therefore delighted that this eBook is also a chapter in our new book "Digital Competence and Future Skills"- recently released by Hanser Publishing", Dr. Philipp Ramin, CEO and Founder of i40, the future skills company.
