COPE CubiLock

What is COPE?

COPE is an acronym for Corporate Owned Personally Enabled Device. It is a strategy to help enterprises deploy and manage their mobile devices. In other words, these are devices that are purchased and owned by the company and are provided to employees for work which can also be used for personal reasons. With the increasing importance of mobility in the workplace, COPE is a business model or strategy that has become more relevant as companies are giving employees more freedom and flexibility when it comes to using corporate-owned devices.

COPE is gaining popularity over BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trends as it provides companies with ownership and control. Because they own the device and the data plan, companies maintain control over software installation, policy configurations, and mobile security. This approach can create a win-win situation for employers and their employees if done correctly. How so?
When you're looking to increase the adoption of mobile devices in your company, or if you are interested in finding ways to improve employee productivity and collaboration, COPE can be a great fit. Companies that subsidize or provide free mobile devices to their employees, see higher adoption rates (of both smartphones and enterprise apps). This is because employees are more likely to use a device if it is free or subsidized. Similarly, when an organization offers its employees access to its own proprietary ecosystem of devices and apps that have been optimized for performance -the benefits continue: improved productivity at work; better customer service through seamless integration with existing systems; better collaboration between teams; and even greater profitability due simply having access to a cohesive system or foundation that all devices run on.

Likewise, COPE also addresses the concerns of IT professionals and employees who have long requested the convenience of having a single device for both work and personal use. The rise of cost-sharing policies and privacy and data protection needs have only made this more pressing in recent years. With the increase in cybersecurity crime rates, the BYOD approach is getting riskier and employees do not wish to take on the burden of corporate security breaches looming in their personal devices at all times. Fortunately, strategies like COPE are becoming more popular and allow employees to use a single device for work and personal activities. These setups are more convenient than having two or more mobile devices, and employees can rest assured that their privacy will be protected by the company and its IT administrators.
COPE is highly favored by employees today due to the ease, convenience, and flexibility of having a single mobile device for dual use. But it also comes with its own set of challenges if not managed properly. The main issue lies in the privacy and protection of data whether it is personal or professional.

This is why the IT team needs to implement an MDM system to protect corporate data and also separate personal data from it. Deploying an MDM system assures employees that their personal data like photos, videos, e-mails, texts, and social media accounts are segregated from company access while it protects confidential corporate data from employee access or exploitation.

How Does MDM Secure COPE Devices?

Create Work Profiles
A work profile is a great way to keep your company's apps and data safe and secure. With a work profile, you can use the same device for both work and personal purposes without having to worry about your company's data being compromised. The work profile keeps your company's apps and data in a separate, encrypted security domain, that uses containerization to keep personal and work data separate.

Kiosk Lockdown Mode
A kiosk lockdown mode ensures that only approved apps are used on employees' mobile devices. You can push work-related apps while blocking access to unnecessary apps that deviate employees from work or malicious apps that cause data breach risks. With kiosk lockdown mode, you can configure what apps go into your COPE device instead of giving full autonomy to end-users over app management.

Whitelist/ Blacklist Websites
You can also use a work profile to blacklist or whitelist certain URLs. This way, you can control what websites your employees can access on their devices. This is a great way to protect your users from intentionally or accidentally visiting websites that could compromise the security of their devices.

You can whitelist work-related websites and blacklist unnecessary websites and URLs to ensure the devices are protected from cybersecurity breaches and strictly used for work during working hours.

Control Peripheral Device Connections
You can have control over device hardware and software settings which rules out the potential security risks and vulnerabilities of unknown networks, Wi-Fi connections, BlueTooth, Speakers, Printers, and much more. Disallowing Bluetooth sharing, power buttons, volume button controls, etc can prevent users from tampering with device settings and allowing unauthorized connectivity and access.

Disable USB File Transfer
MDM allows you to disable USB file transfer in order to protect your users' and company data. This will prevent files from transferring over USB, and will only allow the USB port to be used for charging.

Call Barring
This feature ensures helps companies manage incoming/ outgoing calls in work profiles. This way, you can only make and receive calls from certain numbers ensuring you don't make personal calls during work hours.

CubiLock mobile device management (MDM) solution has been helping organizations implement the COPE strategy all while tackling the security challenges that come with it. It offers you an all-in-one device management suite that ensures your company-owned devices can maximize the device's usability and create multi-layer security protection for confidential data. CubiLock MDM solution integrates all your COPE devices in a unified platform and allows IT admins to take over and automate the task of management and security of these devices remotely.

Takeaway
COPE is primarily a business strategy designed to help companies save money, increase employee productivity and reduce the cost of churn. It aims at making mobility management easier by introducing the concept of corporate-owned devices that can simultaneously be used personally. CubiLock MDM helps in this endeavor by creating an ecosystem where users can seamlessly access corporate resources from anywhere on any device they want. The goal here isn't just about providing convenience-it's also about improving productivity by helping employees find information faster, make better decisions, and secure their mobile devices while they're at their office (or even offsite).
