This year the renowned Zeughausmesse – Decorative Arts Fair will take place from 5th to 8th December. Thanks to the co-operation with the German Historical Museum it is held at the prime location of Schlüterhof, Unter den Linden 2. Ninety-nine Artists and designers present and sell their creations in the fields of jewellery, fashion and home design. For the second time the best results of the Zeughausmesse competition ‘Ingenious Creation’ can be viewed in a special exhibition. Once again this year a professional jury will be honouring and supporting extraordinary artists by awarding prizes for arts and crafts sponsored by Berliner Volksbank.
New this year: On Saturday, 7th December the Zeughausmesse will be open until 9 pm and the entry is free from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Joy of experimentation and professionalism
It is one of the works and sales exhibition’s aims to highlight recent developments in contemporary decorative art. This includes new ideas and approaches as well as proven traditional techniques. The enjoyment of decorative art in everyday life is the applied artists’ stated objective. Anderl Kammermeier, chair of the Berufsverband Angewandte Kunst (professional association of decorative arts) Berlin Brandenburg, puts it in a nutshell: “The uniting factor for us is the joy of experimentation and dealing with material and form. Our aim is to achieve beauty, functionality and originality in every object.” Several generations are represented amongst the exhibitors. They come from Germany and the European region. Many have been awarded decorative arts prizes by their countries and counties.
The glass creations by artists Cornelius Réer and Karina Wendt are combining functionality with aesthetics. Just as the versatile designs by Professor Hermann August Weizenegger from the design department of the Fachhochschule (advanced technical college) Potsdam, they bear witness to the come-back of glass. The elegant crystal vessels are genuinely hand made at the glass manufacture Theresienthal. There is a vase, a jar light, then a tub, a candle or a bowl. The silver smith Ludwig Menzel is represented by imaginatively designed vessels. ”I don’t draw a lot.” he says, ”I quickly have to get to into the material.” This ‘relishing’ the process is reflected in the results. Gudrun Bartenberger-Geyer achieves completely new results working with the material felt, used in an inflationary manner. She is from Vienna and under her label ‘Gänseklein’ seamless garments, ornament and clothing in one, are laboriously crafted by hand, elaborate, idiosyncratic, usually convertible and always made with great care. And a huge range of jewelry can be admired at the Zeughausmesse. From classical and precious to experimental and unusual; the giant “Klunker für Uschi” (rocks for Uschi) on colourful necklaces are just one example.
“An aesthetically pleasing and useful container or receptacle”: this was the motto for the 2nd competition “Ingenious Creation“
Through the competition “Ingenious Creation“ the Zeughausmesse intends to fathom the potential of decorative arts for the progression of design and to give wings to creative artists’ inventive spirit. This year the task was to re-create a container or receptacle in a new and aesthetically pleasing manner. An independent jury of artists and designers has selected seven of the most accomplished products. Among them are the cloth carrier bags by Alexander Penkin. A mundane everyday object is closely scrutinized. Through the transformation of the standard form new variants and functions are created. The carrier bags become experimental objects which can be playfully explored and used.
Decorative Art award sponsored by Berliner Volksbank
For the tenth time the Zeughausmesse is awarding the Decorative Art Prize sponsored by Berliner Volksbank. From all the participants of the fair and the exhibited contributions to the competition the jury will select outstanding achievements. The first and second prizes are endowed with the sum of 1,500 Euros and 1,000 Euros respectively. The third prize is an acquisition for the collection of the ’Deutsches Historisches Museum' valued at 600 Euros
