MOST(R) Cooperation celebrates more than 150 car models with MOST inside

The MOST(R) Cooperation (MOSTCO) - the standardization organization for the leading automotive multimedia network Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) - proudly announces that there are now over 150 vehicle models on the road with the MOST network. "The MOST Cooperation celebrates the success of the leading automotive network standard, reflected by the fast implementation growth rate," stated Henry Muyshondt, Executive Director of the MOST Cooperation. "Amongst the various carmakers that rely on MOST Technology are the three leading international car manufacturers Toyota, General Motors and Volkswagen Group, representing the continents of Asia, North America and Europe." With more than 133 million MOST nodes, MOST Technology is spreading throughout the mass market of all vehicle classes. It is an open technology supported by the majority of carmakers in the world and their premier suppliers.

MOST Acceptance Ramping Up

Within just three years of the founding of MOSTCO in 1998, the first MOST car was introduced in 2001. The following year, 13 more models implemented the MOST infotainment backbone. In 2007, the leading network technology had found its way into 50 car models, increasing to 100 models in 2010 and now reaching 153 models in 2013. After its initial start in Europe, Asian carmakers presented their first MOST vehicles in 2007, followed by the first US carmaker in 2012. Today there are 120 European models, 25 Asian models, and 8 US models available.

Three MOST Generations on the Road

The first generation, MOST25, was based on optical data transmission using plastic optical fibers (POF). It quickly established itself in the European and Korean markets and is now implemented in 122 car models.

The Japanese and US markets implemented the second generation, MOST50, which provides the infotainment backbone in 28 car models. The most significant new feature of MOST50 is that it allows electrical data transmission over an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) of copper wires while meeting stringent automotive electromagnetic compatibility requirements at a very attractive cost.

Recently, Daimler and Volkswagen have started implementing the latest MOST Technology, MOST150, into the first car models: Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Volkswagen Golf. MOST150 enables the use of a higher bandwidth of 150 Mbit/s, an isochronous transport mechanism to support extensive video applications, and an embedded Ethernet channel for efficient transport of IP-based packet data. With the MOST Ethernet channel now on the road to transmit IP data within the vehicle, there is no need to force all data into a particular format to fit a single transmission protocol. MOST transports in parallel many different types of data such as audio, video, and control information, as well as Ethernet and IP frames.

About MOST Technology
MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) is a multimedia networking technology optimized for use in cars and other applications. It enables the transport of high Quality of Service audio and video together with packet data and real-time control over a single transmission medium. MOST can use plastic optical fibers (POF), coax based electrical physical layer, and shielded and unshielded twisted pair (STP/UTP) copper wires that meet automotive environmental requirements. Today, MOST is used in over 150 car models as the communication backbone for their information and entertainment equipment.

About MOST Cooperation
The MOST Cooperation (MOSTCO) is the organization through which MOST Technology is standardized and refined so that it continues to stay abreast of the latest industry requirements. Today it consists of 16 international carmakers and more than 60 key component suppliers. They have joined together to work with the MOST Technology and to contribute to its innovation. The MOST Cooperation is prepared to embrace efforts to further develop and standardize the technology for other industries and to establish the corresponding work structures. The MOST Cooperation was founded in 1998 to standardize MOST Technology as a global standard for multimedia networking. Audi, BMW, Daimler, HARMAN and Microchip Technology are its core partners and constitute its Steering Committee. For more information see http://www.mostcooperation.com.
