AMERICAN CENTURY MUSIC BRINGS DISTINCTIVE PROGRAM TO ST. LOUIS

Concert part of the American Arts Experience - St. Louis

September 18, 2013 - Boston, Massachusetts

American Century Music, a Boston-based performing arts organization dedicated to celebrating the works of 20th-century American classical composers through performance and education, returns to the St. Louis Art Museum on October 4 featuring a unique program of art songs by the great American composer, Samuel Barber. Performing will be the Florestan Recital Project - Aaron Engebreth, Baritone, and Alison d'Amato, Piano. A premier presenter of song collaborations in the United States, the Florestan Recital Project performed a complete cycle of all of Barber's songs during the 2009/10 season to critical and popular acclaim.

American Century Music, led by founding Artistic and Executive Director Scott Parkman, specializes in performing and presenting works by American classical composers from The American Century. According to Mr. Parkman, "This program is a special one - my colleagues Aaron Engebreth and Alison d'Amato of the Florestan Recital Project have selected some of Barber's most beautiful and poignant songs, spread out over the course of his entire life. The Art Song was where Barber went when he needed to replenish his soul, and we know of the incredible care he took in selecting texts. Barber's songs are probably the closest we can get to the essence of Samuel Barber's art."

The program will take place at the St. Louis Art Museum, Farrell Auditorium, on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 7 PM. The concert is free and open to the general public. The concert is part of the American Arts Experience - St. Louis, "A Celebration of American Arts in St. Louis" October 4-20.

About American Century Music
American Century Music is dedicated to celebrating the works of 20th-century American composers through performance and education. Since its founding in 2010, American Century Music has performed over 70 works ranging from solo instrument to full orchestra. Programs have taken place throughout New England, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, St. Louis, and abroad. American Century Music's activities include live concerts, educational partnerships, web-based sources for information about American composers and an Internet radio station, ACM Radio.

Taken together, American Century Music's activities weave a narrative about the numerous currents, opinions, and compositional voices that went into shaping American classical music - and its contributions to the country's cultural life - during The American Century.
