Ambassador of South Sudan to the United Nations, Dr. Francis M. Deng, Comes to Adelphi

On Wednesday, October 2, 2013, Dr. Francis M. Deng will deliver the talk, “Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities in Africa: The Case of the Two Sudans” as part of the Ambassador Lecture Series. Dr. Deng currently serves as South Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations. This event, co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the International Leadership Coordinating Committee, will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of the Republic of Sudan, Dr. Deng is an expert on U.S.-Africa relations and conflict management. He is the first ambassador of South Sudan to the United Nations. In 2007, he was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the special advisor to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide. Prior to that, Dr. Deng was director of the Sudan Peace Support Project based at the United Nations Institute of Peace.

From 1992 to 2004, Dr. Deng was the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Internally Displaced persons. He is the founder of the Brookings Institution Africa Project, focused on economic development and prosperity in Africa, which he directed from 1989 to 2001.

Dr. Deng was Sudan’s minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1976 to 1980, as well as Ambassador of Sudan to the United States, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Canada. He served as the Human Rights Officer in the United Nations Secretariat from 1967 to 1972.

Dr. Deng has also worked in academia as a professor of political science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York; research professor of international politics, law, and society at Johns Hopkins University; lecturer on African Law at Columbia University Law School and visiting lecturer on Law and Nation Building at Yale Law School. He was also a Wilhelm Fellow at the Center for International Studies of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Deng’s work has earned him the 2007 Merage Foundation American Dream Leadership Award and Rome Prize for Peace and Humanitarian Action in 2000. He was named co-recipient of the 2005 Grawemeyer Award for ‘Ideas Improving World Order’. He has authored and edited more than 30 books in the fields of law, conflict resolution, forced migration, anthropology, folklore, human rights, history and politics. He has also written two novels on the crisis of national identity in the Sudan. Dr. Deng holds an LL.B from Khartoum University and an LL.M and a J.S.D. from Yale University.
