Labor Shortage Sweeps the LED Tube Industry

MiscTek Technology, an LED tube manufacturer in China, is facing difficulty in recruiting enough staffs for its LED light production. This situation is also true to most industries in China, especially for those high-tech companies.

Right after the Holiday, the labor shortage is sweeping through the two major economic regions in China, namely the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta regions.

Most companies now can only fill their administrative posts but the general worker’s positions are in great demand.

Alvin Pak, the Managing Director of the MiscTek Technology at http://www.misctek.com said that so far their company could only filled 85% of the vacancies for the portable charger and the solar charger production.

According to Alvin, the current labor shortage did not have big influence to the company, as the 15% of the vacancies were for the low-paid positions, such as the general workers and warehouse team for the LED tube and the LED light production.

The core of the MiscTek Technology is the research and development team, which is formed by experienced researchers and talent technicians. The human resource of this team is quite stable, so the labor shortage will not have influence to the development of the company.

Alvin pointed out that the serious labor shortage was partly caused by the job opportunities available in other parts of the country. Many workers did not return to their original companies after the Chinese New Year breaks. Thus the workers’ demands had been much higher than expected.

Many companies in the LED industry could only fill 50% of the vacancies, which heavily affected the portable charger and solar charger production.

A survey done by the Guangzhou government showed that the province would have a peak labor shortage at 1 million to 1.2 million.

According to Alvin, some companies of the LED tube already raised their salary to attract more workers, but they were still difficult to get enough staffs. This was because that the workers now also take other factors into consideration when they chose their new jobs.

Now workers do not only focus on the high payment, but also the working conditions and their leisure time. General workers in the high-tech companies, such as the LED Light manufacturers, worked under great pressure last year as they were required to work over time to meet the order demands.

Despite the labor shortage, the portable charger and solar charger companies would face other challenges as well, Alvin added. These companies would have to spend time and efforts on the training of the new workers, as workers with no skill would not be able to fit for the LED tube production.
