New CD Release: Florian Uhlig with Penderecki’s Piano

Florian Uhlig brings out new CD with Penderecki’s Piano Concerto “Resurrection“

On the occasion of Krzysztof Penderecki’s 80th anniversary Florian Uhlig presents a new album with the composer’s Piano Concerto “Resurrection“. In recent years the artist has given several performances of the virtuoso work, for example with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela under the baton of the composer. The pianist has studied Penderecki’s oeuvre for quite some time, hence building up a special relationship with his Piano Concerto. On this CD, recorded in Warsaw in January 2013, Uhlig is accompanied by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Łukasz Borowicz.

Already in June 2001 Krzysztof Penderecki had started work on a Capriccio, a new commission from the Carnegie Hall in New York. However, the catastrophe on 11 September 2001 led him to revise the light-hearted character of the work. Instead, he decided to draft a Piano Concerto entitled “Resurrection” – albeit not in the shape of a classical instrumental concerto, but more like a fantasy or rhapsody. The musical material is interwoven in a very dense way; Penderecki lets the characters appear in different episodes and makes use of collage techniques – which may have contributed to the controversial reception the work has had, particularly in Poland, Penderecki’s home country. The emotional impact of the composition is reflected in the scoring for large orchestra as well as in the rhythmically complex virtuoso piano part, which lets Florian Uhlig explore the full sound spectrum of his instrument.

Florian Uhlig’s discography currently focuses on the complete recording of the solo piano works by Robert Schumann. An internationally sought-after musician, he performs, among others, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra. Since 2008 he has been Artistic Director of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival in South Africa.
