How to spot the signs of a good rhinoplasty
The era of selfies ushered in a new trend in plastic surgery and the demand for rhinoplasty surpasses that of body procedures such as liposuction and breast implants. There were more than 850 thousand, in 2020, the most recent information from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). This same global survey identified nose correction as the fourth most performed plastic surgery in the world. In Brazil, ISAPS attests that rhinoplasty is the second most performed facial procedure, with more than 87,000 operations."A successful rhinoplasty makes the look more harmonious and this can be seen in photos taken from the front (selfie) and in profile", explains Caroline Cannarella. According to the doctor, the operation combines technique and art to balance the nose proportionately with the face and ensure a healthy breathing passage.
Caroline lists some more characteristics that identify the signs of a well performed rhinoplasty.
Right volume
Just like eyes and lips, proper volume in a nose is a sign of beauty. "Sometimes the patient arrives complaining of bulbosity, which is excess volume, but a very thin nose does not always match, not to mention that it can interfere with breathing. At these times, it is up to the doctor to welcome and raise awareness of the best options for each case", says the doctor.
Caroline performs a simulation and photographic study to study the possibilities of results with the patient. And it has a multidisciplinary team that includes a psychologist and physical therapist in order to ensure comprehensive care and expand patient care and safety. "I think it's important to treat people the way I'd like to be treated, so I pamper myself. I want the surgery to increase self-esteem and well-being, so there is a whole follow-up that starts at the consultation and extends to the postoperative period.
Harmonic look
Rhinoplasty involves a very delicate balance between doing enough and not overdoing it. The nasal pyramid should have regular dorsal lines and a smooth transition between the dorsum and the tip. "The nose can be upturned, but it must convey naturalness", points out the doctor.
For plastic surgery residents, she teaches how to ask patients to smile and, thus, notice if the tip is well positioned.
The disproportion caused by a first procedure is often only corrected with a new surgery, called revision, a doctor's specialty. "I like challenges and I understand the pain of living with something that is not good and is in the middle of the face, so I dedicate myself to these cases", he says.
Discreet scars
Whether it's an open or closed rhinoplasty there will be scars, but they should not be visible. With proper techniques they are imperceptible after approximately three months of surgery. The final result of rhinoplasty is expected after one year of the procedure, which is usually the time of definitive discharge. During this period, follow-up appointments are scheduled.
According to Caroline, the best sign of a good rhinoplasty is that people don't realize you've had one. "Some patients comment that the people they live with notice a more beautiful and delicate face without often noticing the rhinoplasty", he comments.
Functionality
"We need to balance the patient's desire with their facial features to be able to correctly size the proportions and achieve the best possible look, respecting the functionality of the nose", emphasizes the doctor. In this sense, the starting point for the patient to assess their breathing is before the surgery. "With all the aesthetic concerns with the nose, sometimes we forget that its main purpose is to help us breathe, so here's the tip: at the end of the healing process, every patient should breathe as well as before surgery, or better" , sentence.
