Inflated home prices in pricey Southern California drive newlywed couple to sell domain name for $3 million to buy their dream home

Costa Mesa, Calif. (May 26, 2022) - "Sticker-shocked" by the inflated home prices in their native Orange County, newlywed couple Ana and Ryan Capretz offer to sell their highly sought-after domain name trippin.com to buy their dream home. The price for the domain name is $3 million.

"Seeking to buy a single-family residence in Southern California has become unattainable and scary for first-time homebuyers," said Ana and Ryan Capretz. "We've been saving to buy our dream home, but as prices skyrocket, they outpace wages and savings over time."

In April 2022, the median listing home price in Orange County, where the couple currently lives, is $1 million, trending up 16.6% year-over-year.

"The time was right to sell an asset that could help buy a home and get us into the hyper housing market," said Capretz. "We are motivated to sell our domain name for a premium, just as homeowners sell their homes in Southern California."

The couple joked, "The only difference is the buyer of trippin.com doesn't have to worry about termites or updating kitchens and bathrooms."

The couple put up for sale their domain name, trippin.com, for $3 million. Without marketing and branding the domain name, trippin.com earns more than 300,000 keyword searches per month. The name also receives more than 6,600 searches per month on Google. It also is prized for its short domain name and various ways to brand it for travel, music, lifestyle, or other creative concepts.

"When we acquired trippin.com, the plans were to create a travel-based adventure site and app with a built-in monetizing strategy," said Capretz. "With our careers, we never got around to developing and branding it, but our concept is clever."

Capretz further said, "We're trading in one dream for another because we decided buying a home together as a married couple to grow a family was more of a priority than being business partners."

The Capretz couple would spend about half of the sale of trippin.com to buy a home in Carlsbad, Calif., where inventory is low, and prices are very high. Real estate website Redfin reported that in April 2022, Carlsbad home prices were up 30.4% compared to last year, selling for a median price of $1.5M. Neighboring Oceanside is less at a median price of $850,000.
