Our hearts continue to ache as horrific, hateful acts of violence rip through our nation's communities. We have seen community members targeted at a New York grocery store, a church in California, to now children at a Texas elementary school in a matter of days.

Local Engineers Create a Safety Containment Unit, The Phantom, in Hopes to Stop School and Targeted Group Location Mass Shootings

Gun violence continues to rise throughout the country so in response, three Nashville area individuals have joined together to form ProActive Solutions LLC in an effort to help resolve and reduce school and business shootings with an innovative containment system named, The Phantom. The invention is a unique, patented, transparent, fully automated, bullet resistant polycarbonate (a high impact, shatter resistant alternative to glass) containment unit, measuring 5ft x 10ft x 8ft tall including ADA compliant doorways. It comes complete with metal detection, video and audio surveillance as well as other "proprietary" sensors.

The Phantom is a preventative safety measure to be installed in a school lobby or at an exclusive entrance area and the only point of entry for any late arrival. The purpose of The Phantom is to keep all threats (including deadly weapons) out of the building and away from all students or individuals at gatherings.

The idea for this invention stemmed from a local mental health therapist who said after the Sandy Hook shooting that something needed to change. Three middle Tennessee technical and electrical engineers saw a need for a proactive way to address and reduce firearms in school and financial environments. The focus of The Phantom is on taking a proactive approach to gun violence in our country instead of being reactive. The massive containment unit is designed to keep people from entering a school, a bank or a courthouse with any type of gun. "The Phantom is proactive in that it operates to prevent an incident, not address said incident after it has begun. It is intended to be part of a larger system in keeping a facility safe. This just means that The Phantom cannot be 100% effective by itself if all the windows are habitually left open and unmonitored. There is no single device that can perform that task by itself. The Phantom is a contraband filter. It does not assess people; it addresses the presence of contraband objects," states ProActive Solutions LLC manufacturing President - Richard Ardrey.

If a person enters The Phantom with a weapon unit will detect the threat and shut the person in, containing the weapon until a school official has arrived. "What we noticed as we were researching is that shooters would come in after school had started or already knew who their target was. The device houses a highly sensitive metal detection system that would be installed in a school's lobby. The Phantom is designed to pick up threats not just firearms, but knives or any other threat that can be programmed or designed with metal," states ProActive Solutions LLC manufacturing President - Richard Ardrey.

"It can happen anywhere and anytime. This is a proactive response to make sure no one gets hurt. This is not a double ounce of security, but a full security solution to make sure those gun-free zone areas are gun-free," shared ProActive Solutions LLC VP Sales / VP Manufacturing - Bill Roark Jr.

"3 minutes, 2 minutes or 1 minute, that could be the difference in many many lives and having the ability to detect the threat and then neutralize the threat, it allows for the response time to not be so important. Police or SROs are going to respond, but they have the luxury of knowing that somebody is self-contained and that they aren't going to possibly take lives," explains ProActive Solutions LLC Research and Development VP - Toby Persson.

After three years of research and development went into this endeavor, all testing and patents and trademarks secured, The Phantom is the finished product.

The families hope The Phantom will soon be installed into schools and businesses. The company is now in talks with city and state leaders, school superintendents. State Senator Mark Pody, who has already checked out the device, stated, "Taking an innovative step like this to protect our children would be a positive step for the state of Tennessee."
