Combined identification and x-ray of packages for UPS at Cologne-Bonn airport

Combined identification and x-ray of packages

Combined identification and x-ray of packages

VITRONIC Dr.-Ing. Stein Bildverarbeitungssysteme GmbH and Smiths Detection are working closely together within a pilot project for UPS in Cologne. The objective is the automated identification and x-ray of cross-border packages.

A six-sided reading system including certified volume measurement has been installed from VITRONIC for the automated identification of barcodes and maxicodes on packages. The camera-based identification system VIPAC R6 as well as the x-ray system from Smiths Detection are combined at only one position in the conveyor system technology, this requires less of a footprint than two separate systems.

The advantage of a combined system is the single data set that is created from all captured data which guarantees the quick and easy traceability of the packages based on the saved shipment- or tracking-code. The grey-scale images of the package surface (six sides), the reading results (barcodes, 2-d codes) as well as the volume and x-ray pictures are saved in a VITRONIC archiving system.

Referring to the system control, the combined system requires only one interface and can therefore easily be integrated in the facility.

The background for the combined solution is the European regulation 200/2008 which has been effective since 2010. This regulation as well as the German Aviation Security Act stipulate, that freight has to undergo extensive security procedures (x-ray, atmosphere simulation chamber, etc.) before it is loaded into the aircraft. The consequences of these actions are longer loading and standing times of the aircraft which results in increased cost for all parties involved.
