Summer Heatwave 2022

Summer Heatwave 2022

Through Sunday, temperatures in the northeastern United States are expected to rise, putting additional strain on fans and air conditioners that may have been inactive over the past several days. Temperatures are expected to rise even higher by early next week, according to AccuWeather projections, and many areas along the Interstate 95 corridor will experience the second official heat wave of the season by then - (Summer Heatwave Report 2021)

THE 2021 CLIMATOLOGIST RESEARCH
According to a news outlet, a climate researcher, Vivek Shandas, went on a trip in the Pacific Northwest with an 11-year old boy during a record-breaking heat wave in June, and the data they collected was used to create a climate model for the region. He measured temperatures around Portland with the help of an infrared adapter for his smartphone, which allowed him to do so as temperatures reached extraordinary triple digits. Astoundingly, the temperatures on the exterior of one structure could differ by up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit from the exterior of another, according to him.
"Yet, despite the fact that they are the least efficient air conditioning systems available, portable air conditioners are extremely popular. Only in 2015, more than half a million units were sold in the European Union, accounting for 14.2 percent of total air conditioning sales. In certain countries, such as Germany and Austria, portable units outsold wall units by a significant margin. Because they do not require installation, they are extremely popular with first-time customers. Especially during heatwaves, when many people simply want to cool down their home as soon and easily as they possibly can."
Truly, the previous seven years have been the hottest on record, and temperatures will continue to rise unless the government takes drastic steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While countries continue to fall short in their efforts to reduce pollution, they are already being compelled to assist populations in adapting to the rapidly changing environment. When it comes to stressors, heat is extremely dangerous, and it is much more dangerous in urban places with more concrete than vegetation - which, in the United States, is typically the case in historically neglected brown, Black, and Indigenous communities.

THE HEATWAVE: UPRISING
The upsurge in heatwave has touched almost every single country even where it's least expected like Seattle. As recorded, three days of triple-digit heat in a city like Seattle, which is tucked up against the cool waters of Puget Sound, is not a positive omen for the city's future. Astonishingly, a city surrounded by evergreen trees and dotted with lakes sizzles in the same way that the scorching south-west does. It's a cause for concern. What does it mean for the rest of the country if Seattle, America's capital of comfortable summers, can swelter more than Atlanta, Washington, and New York (Seattle's new high of 108 degrees Fahrenheit, or 42 degrees Celsius, now tops the hottest temperatures ever observed in each of these cities), is unclear. Is it possible that 110s could soon take over the eastern seaboard? Will 120-degree temperatures become routine in Los Angeles? (summer heatwave)

SUMMER HEATWAVE: PREDICTIONS
Despite the fact that temperatures in the Northeast will pale in comparison to the unprecedented heat in the Northwest, and despite the fact that many in the region may believe that this is a typical time of year for hot and humid conditions, temperatures in the region will rise to 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit above average for late June.
By Sunday, temperatures in cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Roanoke, Virginia, are expected to reach the 90-degree Fahrenheit mark, with AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures soaring even higher, into the mid- to upper-90s on multiple days, according to the National Weather Service.
The hot, humid air will expand and intensify across the Northeast on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures ranging from 95 to 100 degrees from Maine to Virginia, while RealFeel® Temperatures in major cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. may reach 100 to 105 degrees during the late afternoon hours.
Some mid-Atlantic cities are expected to experience a full-blown heat wave as the temperature continues to rise. A heat wave is defined as three consecutive days with highs of 90 degrees or higher in this part of the country.
From Sunday to possibly Thursday, peak temperatures in Philadelphia are expected to reach 90 degrees for a five-day stretch. So far this year, the City of Brotherly Love has seen one recognized heat wave, which occurred from June 5 to June 7, when temperatures reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The city attempted yet another heat wave, but came up one day short during the days leading up to the official start of summer on June 20.
Washington, D.C., is also set to experience its second official heat wave of the season, with temperatures expected to soar into the 90s on a daily basis from Sunday through Thursday.

Previously, the only heat wave experienced thus far was a three-day stretch of 90-degree temperatures from June 5 to June 7, which occurred from June 5 to 6.
From Monday through Wednesday, temperatures in New York City are expected to reach 90 degrees or somewhat higher. So far in 2021, the city of New York has only seen one certified heat wave, which occurred from June 7 to June 9.
Despite the fact that Boston is not expected to have an official heat wave, temperatures in the 90s are expected for at least two days. During the days of Sunday and Wednesday, high temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s.

THE GROWING DEMAND FOR AIR CONDITIONERS
As a result of the global warming trend, the demand for air conditioning is predicted to increase fast, particularly in developing nations where air conditioning is still considered a luxury that only a tiny percentage of the population can afford. At the moment, there are slightly more than 1 billion single-room air conditioning systems in operation around the world, which equates to around one unit for every seven persons on the planet. By 2050, it is projected that more than 4.5 billion gadgets would be developed, making them as common as smartphones are today.

HOW BAD ARE TRADITIONAL AIR CONDITIONERS?
However, there is a cost to be paid: air conditioning consumes vast amounts of electricity, placing a pressure on the grid and increasing the likelihood of blackouts in the process. In addition to boosting power consumption, the combustion of fossil fuels generates CO2 emissions. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the synthetic chemicals found in air conditioners and used to cool the air, are also super greenhouse gases, capable of trapping up to three times as much heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. In addition, For the purposes of summarizing, cooling ourselves down runs the risk of overcooking our bodies, resulting in our own deaths.
When a typical air conditioner is used to chill a single room, it can consume as much energy as four freezers operating at the same time. Already, the United States consumes as much electricity for air conditioning as the entire United Kingdom does in a single calendar year. By 2050, the International Energy Agency projects that air conditioning will account for over 13 percent of all electricity consumed worldwide and will emit 2 billion tons of CO2 every year - roughly the same amount of CO2 that India, the world's third-largest polluter, presently emits.

WHAT ABOUT PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONERS? ARE THEY ANY GOOD?
According to Consumer Reports, Portable Air Conditioners do not cool as well as window ACs, but they can help keep you comfortable. In residences where window designs or building regulations preclude the installation of window air conditioners, portable air conditioners are used instead.
In contrast to a window air conditioner, all of the mechanical components of a portable air conditioner are located within the room that you are attempting to cool down. This contributes to the overall noise level.

It's also a contributing factor to cooling that is less than enough. While a window air conditioner uses outside air to chill the coils on the outside of the unit, a portable air conditioner uses conditioned air from the room in which it is being used to cool the mechanicals on the inside. This creates negative pressure, which encourages warm, unconditioned air from surrounding rooms or the outside to flow into the space you're attempting to keep cool while also creating negative pressure.
It's also up for debate whether or not they're transportable. You won't want to move the unit once the hose is connected to the kit in the window (which will allow it to be vented outside). Not to add that they normally average 50 to 80 pounds, with some weighing even greater than 100 pounds.
Portable air conditioners can be difficult to maneuver on carpets and across elevated thresholds between rooms, despite the fact that they are equipped with wheels.
They, too, require their own place. The hose is between 5 and 7 feet in length, and the air conditioner must be placed away from any walls or furniture that could obstruct the airflow from the unit.

WHAT ABOUT AIR COOLERS, ARE THEY BETTER?
To some individuals, air coolers are good and enough, to others they are good but not enough for the weather.
An air cooler can be used by everyone, but it is especially beneficial for those who live in hot and dry climates. Depending on the needs, one can pick from a desert cooler, a window cooler, or even a personal cooler, among other options.

Air coolers employ thermoelectric theory to chill the air in, making them the most effective and environmentally friendly method of air conditioning. They reduce the temperature of the air by generating evaporation, which is then followed by cooling. It accomplishes this by merging the functions of a humidifier, a filter and an air conditioner into one box of air. Portable air coolers are twenty times more energy efficient than conventional air conditioners / portable air conditioners that are mounted to walls or windows, and they are more environmentally friendly than virtually every other portable air conditioner on the market.
An air conditioner circulates the internal air of a room on a continuous basis, whereas an air cooler draws in fresh air from the outside and cools it down. In addition, unlike an air conditioner, an air cooler does not cause the air to become excessively dry. An air cooler improves the quality of the air in your room because of the way it operates. As a result, many who suffer from asthma or dust allergies find that the air circulated by an air cooler is better.
When it comes to value for money, an air cooler outperforms an air conditioner by a wide margin. Aside from the initial purchase price, the operational costs of an air cooler are far lower than those of an air conditioner. It is estimated that coolers use around 80 percent less electricity than air conditioners, making them more cost-effective in the long term than air conditioners.
Going green is something that we are all concerned about, and air coolers are the best option in this situation as well. Air conditioners employ CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and HFC (hydro-chlorofluorocarbons) as refrigerants, which are extremely damaging to the environment and should be avoided. Air coolers, on the other hand, are more environmentally friendly because they use water as the refrigerant.
An air cooler does not require any installation, which is a time-consuming operation when compared to an air conditioner. Regardless of whether you have a window air conditioner or a split air conditioner, they both require additional arrangements for installation. An air cooler, on the other hand, is a piece of equipment that can be easily carried inside your home. Many of the air coolers are also equipped with castors, which makes it easier to transport them from one area to another.
As you can see, air coolers have carved out a distinct niche for themselves throughout the world. Especially because they come with a slew of useful features such as silent operation, remote control, different speed settings, and so on and so forth. Furthermore, today's coolers are technologically upgraded and aesthetically beautiful, allowing them to blend in seamlessly.
Now that you are informed, will you go ahead and invest in a quality traditional AC, a Portable AC or An Air Cooler to keep the sweltering heat away. The choice should be yours.
