Knowing the key trends ahead of the market is essential to buyers, who able to consult the many style books provided by Tiffany.

The global fashion industry owes a lot to Tiffany Hill. In fact without her, the fashion world would be largely bereft of new ideas as smaller brands and independent designers constantly rely on her near biblical trend books.

In fact, there really is no place else that provides the affordable services of Tiffany Hill Studio, operating at the heart of the traditional British home of the textiles and garment industry, West Yorkshire. With both her craft as a freelance fashion designer, her relentless curiosity and razor sharp vision as a fashion forecaster, Tiffany - or simply 'Tiff' as she's usually know - has built a reputation for accurate trend prediction and design.

As Creative Director of Tiffany Hill Studio, Tiff is an accomplished fashion designer and forecaster with 25 years' experience. She worked with well-loved High Street brands such as Next, Per Una and Marks & Spencer before setting up on her own consultancy 13 years ago and loves every minute collecting, curating and inspiring others. "I currently work on all aspects of the business myself including research, website build, trend book creation and design and use a small team of around three freelancers to assist with design and creative tasks on an ad hoc basis."

Biggest names in fashion business

Having launched successful ranges with some of the biggest names in the business, award-winner Tiff is today one of the experts that the top fashion companies turn to when they want to sweep a new clothing brand or a special collection onto the market. She's also a lifeline and highly-respected mentor to students and apprentices in fashion design in the UK and further afield. Her digital trend books are sold across the world - in the UK, US, Australia, Scandinavia, Dubai, as well as in many other countries.

On the subject of style predications Tiff explains: "I'm currently midway through Spring Summer 2023 Trend Books, which means I am working 2-3 seasons ahead. I feel it's prudent for me to not be any further in advance as we have seen over the last couple of years, we never know what is just around the corner and creators pivot their offer according to global changes.

"The majority of major forecasters have already prepared the Autumn Winter 2023/2024 season's books, but I prefer to be a little behind them, so that I can ensure I have current insights."

More immediately, there's a major shift towards sustainability and all ages and genders are giving this priority. She adds: "Following the global pandemic, we are also seeking to heal and nurture our own wellbeing and this desire to feel good again will be apparent in a few ways this summer: more colour, more pattern and more confident design that brings us joy and positivity, a renewed love of nature and the outdoors and organic inspired materials and textures will be key and we will also see nostalgic references like retro inspired design which will merge with advances in technology bringing digital inspired colour and pattern," Tiff enthuses.

New opportunity

Far from being a setback to her business, Tiff seized a new opportunity during the big lockdown by launching the trend side of her business. "I was worried that it may not take off," she confides "but many people who experienced job losses and reduced incomes, re-examined their lives and made the decision to set up on their own. So, my design and trend services were in demand as these new entrepreneurs needed specialist design help and also trend information that made sure they were developing the right products for their chosen market."

Tiff gained a First Class Honours Degree in Fashion Design with Marketing at the University of East London and has since delivered numerous lectures at university level on fashion and marketing-related courses. After qualifying, she was mentored by Singaporean fashion designer and textile artist, Benny Ong whose creations adorned royalty such as Princess Diana and Queen Noor of Jordan.

"From a design point of view, I work with around 50 small brands or new brand launches per year to design their first or second collections. Many of them return to me for follow up design and I feel that's a success in itself, both for me and them," explains Tiff.

"For trend, I'm building a list of regular, repeat customers who rely on my affordable trend books. My forecasts save time and are accessible to all whereas traditional forecasting subscriptions are notoriously expensive."

She means of course world leading consumer trend forecaster's like WGSN whose research provides global trend insights, carefully curated data and industry expertise to help clients understand consumer behaviour and lifestyles. Tiff does likewise, but at a fraction of the cost.
With comprehensive experience within both the luxury and commercial sectors of the fashion industry, Tiff has worked with many off-shore manufacturers and suppliers. But is the fashion industry in good shape for the future?

"Brands need to be more transparent and also fulfil the desires of a more discerning, informed consumer. This new consumer will demand more quality products and less throwaway fashion. This shift is a global one and people are seeking pieces they can keep and treasure, rather than the next quick fix."

Loss of Arcadia

With the loss of Arcadia, so many familiar names have disappeared from our High Street. What impact did this have on her and the business - and does she ever see these shops returning, or will everything be sold online in the future?

"It is very sad that we have lost the presence of so many Hight Street names during the pandemic. I agree that online shopping will continue to increase, but there will always still be a need for physical stores as consumers love to feel and experience the brand when purchasing.

"Online shopping will become the majority share for many brands, but a flagship store or selected number of key stores will also remain important, as long as consumers demand them."

What will be the biggest challenges to her business in the future? "Ensuring that, as a service, it manages to maintain and reflect the fast paced developments in technology. Consumers are always seeking new experiences and the way they receive information, so, ensuring my products are always current and relevant is key," Tiff explains.

Key essentials

Those key essentials Tiffany Hill Studio offers to businesses, whether these lie in fashion design, where inspiration is constantly sought, or to buyers seeking information on what to stock in their stores, are always geared to the trends that will be in demand for the season. This consists of design inspiration and trend confirmation, valuable savings in research time, knowing the key trends ahead of the market, an ability to plan ranges and create must-have products with confidence, to make better product development decisions, benefit from affordable non-subscription downloads, being aware of the key emerging looks that matter, and being more proactive and forward thinking in their planning.

As to the future, some final words from this doyenne of the British fashion design community: "My industry is notoriously secretive and I aim to disrupt the trend industry by bringing designers and brands the tools they need to make smart decisions at affordable prices. It's difficult to access reliable insights as an industry newbie, or independent freelancer. There is a distinct lack of reasonably priced trend information, without the hefty price tag of monthly subscriptions, which is why I offer ready-to-buy digital books, to purchase when needed."
