Everfilt Assists the San Diego Zoo Safari Park With An Expansive Iron Removal Project

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park approached Everfilt® in the hopes to resolve an ongoing iron issue with well water and increased levels in lakes, ponds and watering holes on the property. High risk of iron also meant arsenic and manganese were an issue that is not only harmful and can cause discoloration to anything it comes in contact with, but also proposes potential harm to the wildlife present in the park.

Why Did We Take On Such a Project?
Everfilt® thrives on building long term relationships, interested in mutual approaches to solving problems for our dealers and customers regardless of the project. As in any application where iron is present, chances are manganese and arsenic are also a concern. To add a level of complexity to this project, the clients facility is home to more than 2,600 animals, representing more than 300 species, as well as 3,500 plant species, who solely rely on water in more ways than one. Intrigued by the uniqueness, scale and purpose of this project, the Everfilt® team could not wait to get started.

Challenges?
Like any large scale project, site walks and extensive conversations with onsite staff is always key. Working along side such a willing and educated group of individuals definitely allowed us to fast track areas where utility locating and site preparation would have needed to be completed and most often are very tedious. The biggest challenge were multiple wells sites across 1800 acres, each operating at different flow rates and different pressures. The biggest concern when dealing with iron removal is contact time (water touching the media while it penetrates the media bed) which is very important. With this in mind, we worked backwards from where we needed to be and the common goal agreed on by both parties. 150 PSI operating pressure requires a fair amount of engineering and fabrication. Add in multiple locations, specialty filtration media, chemical injection, dosing equipment and various flows as high as 400 GPM, we had our work cut out.

How Did We Succeed?
Everfilt® has 40+ years of experience in a wide range of water filtration applications, with extensive knowledge and industry experience we were confident to jump in and bring this project to life. Upon completion of fabrication, the Everfilt® I-Series I48-48-4A and I30-60-3A units were ready for installation. Paired with our CI-Series Chemical Injection Skid, units were shipped off to its future home. The end result was just what we anticipated, exceptional results removing iron, manganese and arsenic from the clients well/source water while offering a direct fit, minimal down time and water that is no longer harmful and free from causing discoloration to everything water was in contact with.
