Film Base Berlin and the United States of Umrika

Berlin - This week Film Base Berlin is bringing multiple projects to the European Film Market. Umrika, a France-India-Germany co-production developed last year at the Sundance Institute Lab, was the Mahindra Sundance Global Filmmaking Award Finalist in 2012. The EFM is one of the most important film markets in the world and takes place yearly in tandem with the Berlin Film Festival.

Written and directed by Prashant Nair, Umrika is produced by Mathias Schwerbrock, co-producer of Don 2 and service producer of Ryoo Seung-wan's The Berlin Files—the number 1 film this week in South Korea. Schwerbrock is the line producer on the Berlin-shoot of the Wikileaks film The Fifth Estate and Mandalay Vision's The Voices directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis, Poulet aux prunes).

Umrika is co-produced by Jim Birmant from Paris-based Bliss Films. The script was mentored by Guillermo Arriaga, Marcos Bernstein, Asif Kapadia, Jose Rivera and Audrey Wells and will shoot in India and New York City this fall.
