Lenore Simon, Limited Edition, NICKS II for $85

Lenore Simon, Limited Edition, NICKS II for $85

San Diegan Artist/Printmaker Lenore Simon generously offers an original print, “Nick’s II” for $85.

San Diegan artist and printmaker, Lenore Simon, is generously offering one of her most popular original prints entitled “Nick’s II” in celebration of her upcoming milestone 85th birthday. Signed and numbered prints will be available for just $85 during February, March (the artist’s birth month) and April 2013. The artist is represented in over three hundred private and corporate collections and one of her early etchings was acquired by The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

“Nick’s ll” has a special meaning for Lenore who was born and raised in New York City. As a Fine Art Major at Washington Irving High School and later at Cooper Union for the advancement of Science and Art, Lenore fell in love with printmaking. She believes she was the only student who took a post-graduate course in high school to avail herself of their etching press.

It was during her high school days that Lenore first met Claire, another art student. After graduation, the two friends enjoyed a double date with their prospective mates at Nick’s “in-the-Village” (Greenwich to be precise) the same evening that they had been to the City Center Ballet. Binoculars and a playbill can be seen in Simon’s print. That night, the two friends discovered the young men both knew each other from Bronx High School of Science. The four became life-long friends.

It was this first encounter that resulted in the artist’s first depiction of the famous Jazz Club. Lenore is particularly nostalgic about “Nick’s” as it became the subject of her very first lithograph created “on-the-stone” when she studied Intaglio Printmaking at the highly competitive Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (which remains tuition free to this day.) Lenore “pulled” only 5 prints as she had to relinquish the stone to another student.

The strong subject matter prompted Lenore to replicate the work in “mirror image” through the Serigraph process. In addition she used some of her engraving techniques - working into the negative the linear passages which resulted in the finished work. “Nick’s ll” is a powerful black-and-white image which depicts the sultry, intoxicating mood of the jazz scene in 1950’s New York. The central figures seem to merge with one another. Love, art and music unite into a single experience. As with other artworks by Simon, various shades of atmosphere and emotional intensity are given great emphasis. There is a wonderful contemporary feel to Simon's art.

A small number of "Nicks II" prints remain from the limited edition serigraph and are available for $85 per print. It is the artist’s hope that offering one of her favorite pieces at a substantially reduced price will enable more art lovers on “tight” budgets an opportunity to treat themselves (or a loved one) to something special.
