In this world of online education, computerised learning and video games, children are always hooked onto one device or another. The era of outdoor games is gone whereas online screen time is increasing every day. With every passing day, technology is evolving in a manner that heralds a day, not far away, when every educational component will be digitised and easily accessible. But will that be effective for learners? Will the huge amount of screen time, which is so much fun for today’s students, bring the same amount of joy for future learners? We can’t be too sure about this.



We are aware of the fact that any revolutionary technological intervention needs to knit the benefits of both hardware and software. This integration is capable of bringing the fun of hands-on creation and the pleasure of learning by doing, something which ensures not just visual and auditory learning potential but enhances our kinesthetic learning skills of learners. We must understand that we need ourselves and the future generations to grow holistically to witness a wonderful tomorrow that needs more than just the touch of our fingertip.



Games are entertaining, and many people spend a lot of time playing them. People who are inclined towards games generally stick to video games and online games. These games can certainly be hooking and people can dismiss the world and stay engrossed by games if they take interest in them. On the contrary, many, especially young learners consider learning to be a tedious process. While education is essential for everyone to ensure holistic development, it has to be in a way that ignites curiosity and interest in young minds and allow them to grow as lifelong learners. To make it happen, gamification of learning can function as a mind-stimulating learning tool and can create an engaging learning environment, further motivating thousands of students to take a true interest in learning.



Video games are designed to ensure that it holds the player’s attention for the longest duration possible. But can we use some of these techniques to trick our brain into being more interested in studying? The answer is a yes, but only if we do it right. This process of using virtual rewards for increasing our motivation to do things is known as gamification.

To understand how to do it right, we will have to examine how video games hold a player’s attention. They employ reward systems to ensure that the player is rewarded for the effort they put in. And this reward, given at regular intervals, motivates them to keep going.



Just like that, students work best with positive reaffirmations for the work they are doing. Contrary to common belief, positive reinforcements work much better than negative reinforcements. A reward for doing something right will be a much better motivator than punishment for getting it wrong. So positive rewards for things done right, whether big or small, can work wonders. 



Sounds a little too easy, isn’t it? Well, you know how the saying goes. If something is too good to be true, it probably is. In reality, game designers must make sure that the players get the rewards at the proper intervals. After all, why would anyone keep playing if they can get to the final stage so soon? Similarly, a well-designed gamification system rewards you only after doing a meaningful amount of work. 



Gamification also makes learning a whole lot more fun! Crossing off items in our to-do list is much more fun when we can level up a virtual character with everything we check off. And that tough Physics topic we have always been putting off for weeks can become a lot more compelling when solving it will unlock a new weapon for a game avatar. Systems like these can boost students’ intrinsic motivation and turn it into action.



Gamification can also bring some excitement to the days of students who are dealing with the monotony of preparing for a competitive exam. Which one of us couldn’t use some excitement in our day after all.



Gamification is a concept that applies the elements of gaming in non-gaming contexts. It is a tried and tested method that witnessed significant growth in different areas of education. The goal of education is not to simply cram facts, but also to create opportunities for a student to develop new perspectives, and it is to this end that gamification is much needed, with the added advantage of motivating students.



Be it honing creativity amongst learners, motivating them to innovate, or making them future-ready, gamification is all about empowering learners and introducing them to a paradigm of education that can translate into successful futures.
