Swachh Bharat Abhiyan – A way of living at BPCL

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, Bharat Petroleum is actively participating in the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. The state-owned energy giant continues to conduct various activities as part of this drive which aims at addressing and eliminating various issues related to personal and environmental hygiene in India.

Bharat Petroleum or BPCL is a ‘Maharatna’ company categorized by the Indian government, which signifies its importance to the national economy and citizens of India.
As part of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, BPCL has conducted community meetings and public awareness campaigns known as “SwacchataPakhwadas” across the country. These events were held to promote general awareness among the masses about the urgent need among people of India to maintain a superior level of hygiene both at personal level and for the environment. By the end of 2019, BPCL had conducted over 80,000 such SwacchataPakhwadas across the country, although activities came to a standstill in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, during 2021, BPCL has revived its CSR programs aimed at spreading the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan awareness through a series of initiatives.

Swaccha Bharat a Meenakshi Temple, Madurai-

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and in line with the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, BPCL undertook a major project at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The Meenakshi temple is a major tourist attraction in the world as well as among pilgrims in India. BPCL undertook several projects there. These include setting up e-toilets, infrastructure for tourists, electric vehicles for pollution free environment, especially for senior citizens, a mobile hospital and many more. BPCL also provided ATMs at the pilgrimage site. And BPCL has also provided compactor bins and dustbins for waste segregation, sand sweeping machines and compactor trucks. The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has showered accolades on BPCL for this performance.

The Sri Adi SankaracharyaJanmasthan-

The Sri Adi SankaracharyaJanmasthanis locatedinKaladyvillage, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. This is also a popular place of pilgrimage. BPCL was tasked with the maintenance of this center of pilgrimage and for setting up the necessary infrastructure that would ensure environment-friendly tourism. Since 2017, BPCL has been actively providing public sanitation facilities, clean drinking water and has renovated the roads and drainage facilities at the site. BPCL has also set up a sewage treatment plant near this holy site.

Bandicoot Robots for Waste Collection-

BPCL is the pioneer in introducing Bandicoot, a robot for manhole cleaning. Bandicoot is a kind of rodent, from which the robot gets its name. Bandicoot is being provided to various municipal corporations around India by BPCL. As a matter of fact, the robot was designed and BPCL. It is billed as the only technological solution to end the practice of manual scavenging.

Additionally, BPCL continues to build e-toilets and regular toilets in villages across India to end the practice of open defecation. Its activities have won a lot of praise in India and abroad.
