World Trade Center's ailing workers file suit for healthcare
Almost 10,000 of the workers who rushed out to assist in the rescue operations during the World Trade Center bombing and consequent burning last September 11, 2001 have filed a lawsuit against the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. According to the suit, the mayor has allegedly failed to provide the rescue workers with appropriate healthcare services to those who have fallen ill after the rescue operations. Bloomberg has the control of the company named WTC Captive Insurance funded by the federal government with 1 billion dollars specifically to assist the 9/11 terrorist attack victims. According to records, the 9/11 terrorist destruction of the Twin Towers that is 110 storey-high had claimed the lives of 2,700 people and more.Los Angeles, California, July 19, 2007 – The law firm handling the ill rescue workers case is the Worby Groner & Napoli Bern. They represented the case of a hospital worker who has been diagnosed of cancer, lung and other digestive system diseases and two police officers of New York City. One of the officers had leukemia and another one had serious lung disease.
Last month, the medical examiner of New York City had given in to admitting that two police officers, at the very least have already died of respiratory problems. These two officers have guarded the "ground zero" or the WTC ruins site during the months after the attacks. This is the first time ever such statement was released since 2001.
Recently, many other rescuers have announced that they are suffering from respiratory problems because of the burnt debris at the WTC ruin site containing large amounts of asbestos.
Presently the said law firm is representing almost 10,000 of the WTC workers through a class action lawsuit against the New York City Hall.
It was stated in the lawsuit that Bloomberg along with the insurance company he handled have "unethically profited" from the federal government funding. They mentioned that the ill workers were not provided with sufficient funds for the medication and healthcare they require.
The lawsuit strategically declared that the company had already spent 74 million dollars of the funds in legal bills and overhead. It has also provided payment of 45,000 dollars to a worker who had fallen off a ladder in the ruined WTC site, now known as the "ground zero."
David Worby of the Worby Groner & Napoli Bern law firm insinuated that Bloomberg was given a billion dollars by the Congress only to cover off the mistakes that he and former Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, committed by failure to protect the thousands of workers who have sacrificed themselves during the rescue operations. Worby also declared that the Mayor is adding insult to the workers' injuries by refusing to utilize the funds that is intended for helping out the ill and dying heroes of the 9/11 event.
