The Sustainable Buildings Consortium has opened registration for the second annual First Nations Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Communities, held February 27-28, 2013 at the River Cree Resort in Edmonton, Alberta.
In response to the ongoing crisis regarding sustainability and infrastructure in First Nations communities, a contributing factor fueling the current Idle No More movement, the Conference will bring together a diverse group of delegates to continue the conversation about sustainability for Canada’s First Nation communities.

Last year’s inaugural Conference was an unprecedented success, attracting over 150 delegates. The event brought many high-profile First Nations Speakers to Edmonton, including Grand Chief Stan Louttit (Attawapiskat) and Chief Clarence Louie (Osoyoos).

This year’s keynote speaker will be Wab Kinew, former host of CBC’s 8th Fire. Currently the University of Winnipeg’s Director of Indigenous Inclusion, Wab’s coverage of the Idle No More movement has already garnered international attention.

The Sustainable Buildings Consortium is a non-profit research institute dedicated to green buildings/green materials research and development, as well as public policy advocacy related to the integration of environmentally preferable standards for buildings and communities.

The Consortium was created by Manasc Isaac Architects in 1999. Its vision is to reduce the environmental footprint and enhance the quality of life in buildings, by developing new materials, systems and strategies that enable others to achieve their goals of designing and constructing sustainable buildings.

This vision is realized through research, product design, teaching, and holding conferences related to the design of sustainable buildings and communities.
