Active Start to the Day – Efficient Running Training before Breakfast

Many athletes consider running early in the morning a perfect start to a new day. The early training not only releases endorphins, but also provides power for the rest of the day. But the question is whether the run should take place before or after breakfast. Some people say before, some vouch for after. Nevertheless, there are clear advantages of an early training on an empty stomach for both personal weight regulation and training efficiency.

Sport before breakfast with weight-loss effect

A study conducted by the University of Glasgow found that running before breakfast helps to get rid of extra pounds. The researchers tested three different situations on ten test persons: training before breakfast, training after breakfast and breakfast without training. The results show that the last situation, as expected, barely had any outcome on weight regulation. But the comparison between the first two groups is of more interest. Subjects who trained before breakfast burned more fat, and their metabolic rate was higher than with training after the early meal. Because of the missing intake of food during the night, the scientists explain, the glycogen level is very low. The endurance strain on an empty stomach forces the body first to take the needed energy out of the last remaining glycogen storage and shortly afterwards out the fat reserves. Thereby, extra weight can be lost.

Early run mobilises fat metabolism

When runners already put on their shoes before the first meal of the day, it can also have a positive effect on endurance performance. Without carbohydrate-rich food before training, fat metabolism is stimulated; this causes stronger mobilisation of free fatty acids. In this process, the body not only learns to use more free fatty acids for energy supply, but also to empty the glycogen storage more slowly. The body’s energy sources are used more efficiently and the personal stamina is improved. So the consciously-generated condition of energy shortage by running on an empty stomach can optimise fat metabolism.

Despite the advantages of an early training session, runners should not go too far: Running on an empty stomach should not take longer than 60 minutes, in order to prevent a strong feeling of hunger or even stomach cramps.
