Self Help: 13 Healthy Habits to Start Living Your Best Life Now

Feeling stuck? In a rut? Here are 13 positive personal development self- help healthy habits which will help you start living your best life. Stop waiting for tomorrow. First, we’ll check out a quick list, then each component will be broken down more thoroughly. Which positive habits will you start?

Some of these seem like common sense, but if you’re in the habit of doing something one way, it can be a challenge to make a dramatic change. Start small and build habits one at a time or slowly, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Each change you make will help you thrive and bring you to a more positive mindset. Shall we take a look?

13 Ways to Build Positive Self- Help Healthy Habits
1. Set measurable and attainable goals
2. Build a habit of gratitude
3. Reach out and help others
4. Invest in time for self-replenishment
5. Slow down and aim for deeper focus over multi-tasking
6. Visualize positive outcomes
7. Recognize, then release limiting beliefs
8. Evaluate what helps you move forward, drop the rest
9. Set time aside for stimulating your brain
10. Focus on solutions, in place of focusing on problems
11. Focus on authenticity of who you are over what you think other people expect
12. Avoid drama and negative people and situations
13. Establish routines

Set measurable and attainable goals: Choosing a goal that’s unreachable will drain your spirit and drive. By setting goals that you can both measure and reach, you’ll be more likely to stick with them. As the old medieval French saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” (source: https://archive.org/stream/liproverbeauvila00tobluoft#page/42/mode/2up ) Nobody is saying that you have to list out every single thing as a goal on a task sheet, but do become aware of goals you can work toward that will make your life better.

Build a habit of gratitude: It’s easy to get caught in a habit of complaining about all the tiny things that add stressors to our day, but what if instead you focused on the many things that you’re grateful for? Your entire mindset shifts, and you start to feel uplifted, rather than like you’re slogging through your day. Focus on the warm coffee mug in your hands on a cold winter day instead of a spill you had to clean up when it splashed. Big or small, those little positive habits add up.

Reach out and help others: When we’re focused on others, we tend to stop zoning in on our own problems, which felt like giant thorns in our side. Not only are you doing good, but the act itself does good for you in return. This can be done through the simple act of helping a neighbor, volunteering time, doing some teamwork to lighten another person’s workload. The options are unlimited.
Self-replenish: We’re not superheroes, though many of us in society have jobs that might seem that way: policeman, fireman, soldiers, nurses, and doctors come to mind. They’re in the trenches daily. But, if we’re constantly on the go and pushing ourselves hard to do more, you end up burning out. It’s important to self-replenish and take care of yourself. Read a book, enjoy a nice meal, take a weekend getaway, sleep in, whatever it is that gives you joy, be sure to add it to your routine.

Stop multi-tasking and go deeper: We’re in the habit of doing too much at one time. We think we’re efficient and get more accomplished, but the truth is by doing one thing at a time, and focusing on that project, you’ll make fewer mistakes and do a better job. Deep thinking is pushed aside, when in fact, it can help you tremendously.

Visualize positive outcomes: Do you catch yourself thinking, “It probably won’t work out,” or “Why am I even trying,”? The truth is, that negative and destructive critical-talk plagues you more than you realize. Instead of thinking, what else could go wrong, think…wow, imagine if this works how I expect! How awesome. This subtle shift is more valuable than you might believe. Imagine the possibilities.

Limiting self-beliefs: “People like me don’t get promotions like that…” Why not? Is it because you convinced yourself? Consider this, those messages you’ve told yourself—your brain believes you if you keep repeating them. Knock out the self-beliefs and give your brain something better to feed you through the day, like, “I’ve been working hard. I’ll bet I have a shot at that promotion with the skill set I’ve picked up.”

Focus on what moves you forward: We busy ourselves with a lot of to-do’s and tasks through our day, and yet somehow when evening rolls around, we feel like we didn’t accomplish much. Why is that? When you spread yourself out and do tiny tasks, a lot of times, it doesn’t move the needle on what you need to do. Focus on the big stuff, the stuff that will make the biggest impact to start seeing greater gains.

Do some brain work: Grab a crossword puzzle, read a book on a new topic, or watch a documentary that makes you think. Keeping your brain active is a priority. We get so used to watching TV, flipping through our email, mindlessly scrolling social media or the news, but it doesn’t stimulate your brain in a way that leads to growth.

See the solution, rather than the problem: When you look at how to fix something, how to work it out, you’re in a positive mindset. If you focus on the issue and everything wrong with it, you’re in a negative mindset. This simple perspective change is a simple habit that will make a big difference in your life. How often do you face a task from the other side? We focus on how the problem is bothering us, rather than seeing ways to address the problem to make it better.
Stop worrying about what other people think of you: Wasting energy on other people’s thoughts and judgements is a huge regret ( https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/feb/01/top-five-regrets-of-the-dying ) for those they studied near death. Deepest regret? Not going after what they wanted, and instead worried what others might think. Get ahead of this now.
How much energy have you wasted thinking about others? Have you avoided doing something because you were worried what others might say or think? Don’t regret your choices. Live authentically and build your happiness.
Avoid drama and negativity: Have you ever heard of energy vampires ( https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/energy-vampires ) ? They are the people that exhaust and sap your energy, simply being around them. There are some people we can’t avoid, but others come down to a choice. Cut the negativity from your life, and feel the weight drop from your shoulders. If you can’t remove them from your life, limit the time spent around them, or don’t partake in situations that may cause drama. Excuse yourself from the circumstance and pat yourself on the back, in place of engaging them.

Establish routines: Routines help us build healthy habits whether it’s exercise, eating right, creating a healthy sleep schedule, or getting to work on time. If you’re all over the map when it comes to your day to day, consider developing small routines. It doesn’t have to be structured from A to Z, but having a few routines will help right your ship and help you accomplish more. When you accomplish more, you’ll not only be more productive, but you’ll be happier at the things you’ve been able to achieve.

What Does Science Say?
Well respected, John Hopkins Medical says, “People with a family history of heart disease who also had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five to 25 years than those with a more negative outlook.”

According to Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health.”

Two leaders in health care are all about positive thinking. Isn’t it time you get on board? Need more? It was found in a study from the Behavior Research and Therapy journal that, “Pathological worry is reduced by thought replacement in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.”

The facts stack up. There’s no denying that there are deep benefits to positive thinking and working on your mindset. With the list above, you’ve got a head start and can begin today.

Is there an area in your life that will be easier to make changes? Which will make the biggest impact on your day, week, month, or year? Don’t simply read this and put it aside, rather take action and move forward. These are easy, actionable things anyone can add to their life. We choose our mindset. It’s time to live in the positive moment!
