Legendary Musician and Performance Artist Laurie Anderson in Dirtday! at Adelphi on October 12

09-12-2012 11:14 PM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: Adelphi University

On October 12, 2012, world-renowned musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson comes to Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) in Dirtday!, a piece reflecting contemporary America. The evening’s program, which begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall, will feature electric violin, keyboards and electronics. The show will combine conventional and nonconventional instrumentals with electronic soundscapes. Using a combination of art mediums, Anderson creates a powerful story-telling performance.

In Dirtday!, Anderson uses her unique story-telling ability to depict contemporary America, encompassing politics, desire, and portraits of cities and people. Solo violin pieces like the Grammy nominated “Flow” from Homeland, will mix with filler electronic soundscapes to create an intimate look into what has made Anderson one of the most original American song writers.

Anderson is known around the world for her theatre pieces, music, and art work. Her performances display a variety of media – music, video, story-telling, projected imagery, and sculpture. Anderson has released seven albums for Warner Brothers, such as “Big Science,” featuring the song “O Superman,” which rose to number two on the British pop charts. In 1999, Anderson created her own interpretation of Herman Melville’s 1951 novel Moby-Dick in “Songs and Stories From Moby Dick.” Her visual art has appeared at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and throughout Europe, including the Centre Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris.

As a young artist, Anderson studied the violin and played in the Chicago Youth Symphony. She graduated from Barnard College magna cum laude, as well as obtained a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from Columbia University. At Columbia, Anderson’s earliest performances were on the streets or in informal art spaces in New York. In one memorable performance, she played her violin while standing on a block of ice wearing ice skates. The show ended when the ice melted.

Tickets for this event are on sale now. Regular price tickets are $15.00 to $45.00 and discounts are available for groups, students and seniors. To learn more about AUPAC’s season, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call The Lucia and Steven N. Fischer Box Office at (516) 877-4000.
