Leading Private Tutoring Agency, Tutors International, Agree With Government’s Plan for Primary School Curriculum Shake-Up

Adam Caller, founder of one of the world’s leading private tutoring agencies, Tutors International, welcomes Education Secretary Michael Gove’s plans to make primary school education tougher – especially in maths, English and science. [1]

“There are two choices,” Caller states. “We can either make the curriculum harder for the older pupils and the standards will filter down to the earlier stages, or we can make it more challenging right from the start of their school life, so by the time pupils are doing their GCSEs and A-Levels, their educational standard is on a par with the rest of the world.”

Although it will take an entire school generation – around 14 years – to see the full results of the proposed changes to the primary school curriculum, Caller believes Mr Gove’s decision to work from the bottom up is the right one.

“[Curriculum changes are] an easy thing for a government to abolish. It’s much harder to introduce this sort of shake up, but we desperately need it,” continued Caller.

Tutors International have reported that roughly half of their tuition enquiries come from families looking for private tuition at a primary school level. He recounts the story of a recent meeting with parents and their five-year-old son, who are seeking to engage a private, full-time home tutor:

“Parents are despairing of the standards in our primary schools. This child was bored rigid at school. He was being asked to add single figures of apples to bananas. When I questioned him further, it was evident that this child could multiply four-figure sums, once pointed in the right direction.”

Caller adds that it’s not just gifted children who benefit from a private tutor. “Kids do want to learn. It’s finding the right level and building on that. Less is expected of our children, but we should be stretching children, especially the top end, because these are the people who will eventually make society what it needs to be.”
