Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 22nd June

06-25-2007 07:03 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on European contract wins, with household names such as Danone, Electrolux, Samsung and Birds Eye all outsourcing logistics requirements. M&A developments see Russian Railways and Deutsche Bahn sign an agreement to set up and manage a shipping and logistics company whilst in Asia, Agility has signed an agreement to acquire two logistics companies in Singapore, building its presence in the energy and break bulk sectors.

Elsewhere Geodis, Schenker and MOL logistics are investing in European logistics facilities, whilst Christian Salvesen and Yusen Air & Sea are both investing in technology systems. In the UK, the FTA is warning that development of UK port and rail infrastructure is essential and in Europe, ACEA is forecasting a stagnant 2007 automotive market.

FedEx warns 2008 earnings growth will slow

20 June 2007 - Full year results saw FedEx Corp. report revenue of US$35.2 billion, up 9.0% from US$32.3 billion the previous year, as operating income reached $3.28 billion, up 9.0%. The operating margin of 9.3% was unchanged from the previous year, as net income grew by 12.0% to reach US$2.02 billion.

Revenue grew due to strong FedEx Ground volume growth, as well as continued FedEx Express International Priority revenue growth. Revenue growth also reflected the acquisition of Watkins Motor Lines in September 2006.

Fiscal 2007 results included costs associated with upfront compensation and benefits under the new pilot labour contract at FedEx Express, which reduced second quarter earnings. Fiscal 2006 results included a charge to adjust the accounting for certain facility leases, primarily at FedEx Express.

FedEx Express saw revenue increase 6.0% in Fiscal 2007, to US$22,681.0 million (accounting for 64.4% of total revenue). Operating income increased by 11.0%, to US$1,955.0 million as the segment’s operating margin reached 8.6%, from 8.2% the previous year.
FedEx Freight reported full year revenue of US$4,586.0 million, up by 26.0%, as operating income fell by 5.0% to US$463.0 million. FedEx Freight accounted for 13.0% of total 2007 revenue. The segment’s operating margin fell from 13.3% the previous year, to 10.1% in fiscal 2007.

Looking ahead, capital spending for fiscal 2008 is forecast to be approximately US$3.5 billion, up from US2.9 billion in fiscal 2007, of which approximately 70.0% is targeted for growth. FedEx warned that earnings growth is expected to be below the Company’s long term 10.0% to 15.0% earnings growth target due to continued soft economic growth and to planned investments to expand the Company’s networks and broaden its service offerings.
