The representatives of the founding members

Germering, May, 2012 – As a leading producer of embedded platforms, Advantech has been a founding member and driving force behind establishment of the embedded consortium SGET (Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies). The body aims to create and advocate standards for embedded technologies. The term is defined more broadly than is currently the case at existing organizations and also covers software, interfaces or systems. SGET’s lean and agile structure also enables standards to be formulated as quickly as possible so that companies can respond to the rapid innovation cycles in the embedded industry. There is a large demand: more than 50 companies have already voiced their interest in becoming members.

“We look forward to sharing our expertise in discussions and to the standards that will emerge,” says Carsten Rebmann, Technical Adviser. “We feel it important not just to focus on board standards, but also tackle topics like software or systems. Only then true product compatibility can be achieved.”

Standards ensure greater security
The important of substitutability giving companies security to plan ahead is shown by a look at the customers. New developments are often a strategic decision, in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises. If a new product can no longer be produced because a supplied part has been discontinued, that can have fatal repercussions for the company. Standards help then find an alternative and so save the product. Standards also mean that decisions are no longer based on technology, but that extra services play the crucial role.

Initial workgroups already appointed
The first two workgroups, in which Advantech will participate, have already been appointed. One will deal with the Qseven standard and the other with a further COM standard for ARM-based applications. The focus will be to formulate next-generation standards. Another special aspect is that the workgroups can be combined to address different issues, such as boards, software and the system level – Advantech has the major advantage here of operating at all levels and thus being able to generate value add across the products.
