What You Should Know Before Buying A Used Catalyst

A catalyst is one of the key vehicle parts. It is needed to clean exhaust gases from toxic compounds causing air pollution and severe diseases including cancer. There are approximately 1 billion cars in the world (now we are not taking into account other vehicle types), and without cats, the environmental and medical picture would be truly terrifying.

The first vehicle cat was designed in the 1970s to prevent the harmful impact of exhaust gases on the health of not only drivers but car passengers and pedestrians too. Currently, a cat is an indispensable element of a vehicle.

Note that using a car without a catalyst is illegal now in most countries of the world. The only exception is made for old models the construction of which provides no catalytic converter at all. In all the other cases drivers need to have their catalysts inspected at the proper time and replace an old device when it is needed.

What Determines The Price Of A Catalytic Converter

A catalyst is one of the most expensive vehicle elements. A mid-range cat costs up to $1,500!

Why are catalysts so expensive? The answer lies in precious metals (PGMs) contained in the internal honeycomb element. The catalytic coating may contain platinum, palladium, and (or) rhodium.

Platinum is present in most vehicle cats. This metal type is needed to negate exhaust gases and eliminate negative impacts. Palladium is contained in more expensive devices. Rhodium is a supplementary material which helps in eliminating residual toxins in exhaust gases.

How Much PGMs Can Be Recovered

A catalytic converter has a limited service life after expiration of which the device is useless. But it still contains precious metals that can be recovered and used in the production of something new, for example, vehicle catalysts, electronic parts, etc. Thus, buying used catalytic converters may be a good business.

You cannot know for sure how much precious metals are contained in each particular cat. If you are looking for the best offers check out hyundai catalytic converter scrap price by https://autocatalystmarket.com/ (the biggest catalyst market with over 24,000 items for sale.)

The amount of PGMs depends on many factors, such as car type, engine capacity, country of manufacture, etc. Note that gasoline SUV and large-engine track catalysts contain up to 1,05 oz (30 g) of precious metals. Car cats usually bring much less: only up to approximately 0,2 oz (6 g) in total.

A small piece of advice: look for clogged or damaged catalysts, if you are interested in recovering more precious metals. The longer a cat is in use, the thinner its catalytic coating which contains PGMs.
