The week, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) announced its solicitation of applicants for Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. Through the program, $1.2 million of funding is available to train workers and employers in recognizing workplace hazards, maintaining a safe work environment and understanding their workers’ rights under Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act. Nonprofits such as community organizations, faith-based organizations, employer associations, labor unions, and institutions of higher education are entitled to participate in the program. These organizations can apply for a Targeted Topic grants or a Training Materials Development grant.

According to the BLS Census, in 2010 4,547 workers in the United States died as a result of Workplace injuries. Thousands of working men and women are injured every day because of employer negligence, workplace hazards, inadequate safety equipment, and improper training. “Many workplace injuries can be prevented with the help of OSHA’s training program,” Ricciardelli adds.
