SGS helps Taiwan Adventist Hospital become the World's First ISO 50001:2011 Certified Hospital

SGS is pleased to announce that it has certified Taiwan Adventist Hospital in Taiwan against the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management Systems Standard on February 21, 2012. Taiwan Adventist Hospital is the world’s first hospital to have obtained this certification just following the publishing of ISO 50001:2011 by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on June 15, 2011.

The Taiwan Adventist Hospital has introduced ISO 50001:2011 to its campus. The hospital identified three energy-consuming items, namely, air conditioning system, lighting system and boiler system through energy audits. Based on these results, the Taiwan Adventist Hospital proposed four energy management projects: (1) add inverters to the air conditioner units and blowers; (2) use high-efficiency lighting and automatic sensor switches; (3) reduce electricity consumption by more than 109,000 kWh; and (4) contribute 1.09% to the overall energy saving performance.

To fulfill its corporate social responsibilities, the Taiwan Adventist Hospital is dedicated to provide the resources to support and manage a hospital implementing the philosophies of environmental protection, energy saving, and low carbon emissions by responding to government energy saving and carbon reduction policies, following energy management regulations, improving energy performance, and purchasing energy-saving products. The Taiwan Adventist Hospital aims at being an example of energy management in domestic medical systems to encourage numerous hospitals to promote the saving of energy and reduction of carbon emissions.

ABOUT ISO 50001

The ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems standard is developed by the ISO/PC 242 energy management project committee of International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 50001 specifies requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain and improve an energy management system, which enables an organization to take a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency and energy conservation. It helps organizations to manage energy supply and energy uses and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for energy using equipment, systems, processes, and personnel. Implementation of the standard should lead to reductions in energy cost, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts through systematic management of energy. ISO 50001 is anticipated to affect up to 60 percent of the world’s energy consumption and has the potential to become a global trade catalyst for industrial energy efficiency in the same way that ISO 9001 has become for quality.

ISO 50001 is an international framework for industrial, commercial or institutional facilities, or entire companies, to manage their energy, including procurement and use. It is applicable to all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions.

Conformance with ISO 50001:2011 will demonstrate that a plant or company has sustainable Energy Management System in place, has completed a baseline of energy use, and has committed to continuously improve energy intensity.

ABOUT TAIWAN ADVENTIST HOSPITAL

Taiwan Adventist Hospital is one of over 600 healthcare institutions operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in a worldwide mission system. With the church's planning and the government's sponsorship, the Hospital was relocated from Shanghai to Taipei in 1949.Dr. Harry Miller, the hospital's founder, re-established the facility as the Taiwan Sanitorium Hospital. Madame Chiang Kai-shek cut the ribbon at the completion of the hospital on March 28, 1955. Afterwards, due to the hospital's expanded service scope, it was renamed the Taiwan Sanitarium and Hospital. The hospital initially had 70 beds. Founder Dr. Miller hoped that spreading the Good Word and curing sickness would lead more people to follow Jesus Christ. As equipment and services expanded, the number of beds increased to 220. Responding to changes in society, the hospital began community health care work in 1971, and was renamed the Taiwan Adventist Hospital. After the original building had become too small, a new building was built on the original site in 1986, and heralded an improvement in medical quality. Since 1994 the hospital was accredited by the Department of Health (DOH), Executive Yuan as a Regional Teaching Hospital. The Bureau of Health, Taipei City Government approved a change in the hospital's Chinese name during the same year. In 2006,the hospital got the approval of a New Hospital and Teaching Hospital Accreditation system by the DOH.
