Partnership Between atlatec and Applus+ IDIADA Results in 330 Kilometers Scanned Catalan Roads and a Sample Set

Karlsruhe, Germany — Several months ago atlatec Gmbh partnered up with the Spanish company Applus+ IDIADA and scanned 330 kilometers of Catalan public roads to collect data required for the creation of high-definition maps (HD maps) to be used to validate autonomous vehicles. Scanned routes include highways, interurban roads, rural roads, and city streets. The routes were selected for their above-average probability of encountering challenging situations for connected and automated vehicles.

The HD maps created by atlatec GmbH are now available for companies or research institutions that need such maps to test their highly automated prototypes on public roads in Catalonia.

In 2019, atlatec and IDIADA joined forces on the development and testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads for the first time. IDIADA’s Joan Carbó, Director, Chassis & Active Safety commented back in 2019: “The HD map creation capabilities of atlatec GmbH complement Applus+ IDIADA’s engineering and testing services for the development of highly automated vehicles for our international clients.” Before the agreement on collaboration was signed, Applus+ IDIADA performed a strategic analysis within the framework of Catalonia Living Lab, aimed at forming objectives based on the expectations of key stakeholders in the international automotive sector.

Following the scan of 330 kilometers of Catalan public roads, the companies joined in a major trend in the autonomous driving space today: collaborating and sharing of data. The collaboration between atlatec and Applus+ IDIADA resulted in the release of a second set of free sample data. As of today, a sample set of Catalan 3D roads with inch-perfect accuracy is available for download on the atlatec website.

The dataset is free to use for companies, research institutions, and any interested parties. It comes with a high richness of annotated assets relevant for autonomous driving or the development of modern ADAS features.
