PUTTING BUSINESS THINKING ON THE LINE
In the midst of increasing social, economic and political unrest across the globe, a new book by business visionary and futurist, Alan Moore, challenges current thinking about how societies, businesses and economies are structured, and presents a revolutionary logic for a more human-centric world. At the heart of the book, ‘No Straight Lines: Making Sense of Our Non-Linear World’, is a new literacy that explains what comes next in terms of how we can create better and more sustainable societies, companies and vibrant economies.
‘No Straight Lines’ explains that we have arrived at the edge of the adaptive range of the industrial age and, in the transition from a linear to a non-linear world, are being overwhelmed by complexity. Faced with increasingly pressing and urgent problems, we are presented with a design challenge: how do we create better societies, more able organisations, and more vibrant and equitable economies relevant to the world we live in today?
As author Alan Moore says: “Straight line thinking just isn’t working for people, for business or for economies any more. Whether you’re talking, the near collapse of the global financial system and banker’s bonuses or the fact that six million people in the UK don’t have access to a bank account and looting on the streets of London, phone hacking and the media, we’ve ended up with a system that is dysfunctional and failing, and we're now crossing the boundaries of what's morally acceptable.”
‘No Straight Lines’ presents an inspiring plea for an entirely new way for true social, economic and organisational innovation to happen. It argues that we have the possibility to truly transform our world, to be more resilient, to be more relevant to us both personally and collectively, and at the same time to be sustainable, economically vibrant and humane, through the tools, capabilities and processes at our fingertips.
In 2005, Alan Moore highlighted a major trend in his previous book, ‘Communities Dominate Brands’. Co-authored with Tomi Ahonen, it showed how the new phenomenon of digitally connected communities was counterbalancing the power of the big brands and advertising.
‘No Straight Lines’ goes even further and is already attracting comment from major business thinkers, leaders and writers.
As B Joseph Pine II, co-author of ‘The Experience Economy’ and ‘Infinite Possibility’, says: “Anyone worried about where business is going in today’s chaotic world — and everyone concerned with where it should be going — must read ‘No Straight Lines’. Alan Moore has captured what is happening, but more importantly provides prescriptions for what individuals, companies, and society should do about it to create a better world.”
Tony Kypreos, co-founder and mentor of Springboard, the advisory board for European Leaders, agrees and comments: “If companies such as Nokia had followed Alan’s insights and concepts five years ago, they would have had different outcomes. I recommend corporate leaders to interpret how No Straight Lines applies to their organisation and take action.”
Published by Bloodstone Books, ‘No Straight Lines’ is available in paperback for £14.99 and as a Kindle ebook for £6.99. It is also available to read as a free browserbook online at http://read.publification.com/b/no-straight-lines.

Alan is founder of the innovation consultancy firm SMLXL and co-author of ‘Communities Dominate Brands’, in which he explored the significant implications for business and organisations of living in a wired-up, networked, socially orientated world.
