Press release from: Kay Yow Cancer Fund

/ PR Agency: Largemouth Communications
The Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation (HSCSC) today announced the inaugural “Play 4Kay™ on Hillsborough Street,” a series of fundraising events and activities that will take place throughout February to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund®.

Raleigh area residents, NC State students and fans are invited to attend the first “Tip Off” Bowl 4Kay event at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at The Alley. Mark Thomas from The Insiders on 620 AM The Buzz will emcee the night and guests will hear from NC State head women’s basketball coach, Kellie Harper, the HSCSC and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Attendees can enjoy unlimited bowling at The Alley through midnight with a $10 donation.

HSCSC is a proud sponsor of the seventh annual NC State women’s Hoops 4 Hope basketball game; the money collected through the Play 4Kay on Hillsborough Street events will add to the total Hoops 4 Hope funds raised.

NC State’s Hoops 4 Hope is one of the many Play 4Kay games taking place across the nation to raise money for women’s cancer research, and to unite and honor cancer survivors. All Play 4Kay event proceeds benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Fund was established by former NC State women’s head basketball coach, Kay Yow, who passed away in 2009 after her 22-year battle with breast cancer.

“The NC State Hoops 4 Hope game is especially significant because this is where it all began,” said Former NCAA Vice President and newly appointed Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director Sue Donohoe. “It is inspiring to see the support and passion of NC State women’s basketball fans for this great event. The outpouring of support from the Hillsborough Street businesses is a model of how an entire community can unite to raise money for cancer research. It is this type of unwavering support that ensures Coach Yow’s legacy and vision will endure.”

In honor of the fundraising events throughout February, Hillsborough Street will be “painted” pink with ribbons and banners bearing Coach Yow’s image, sponsored by Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Alumni. Guests can make a donation at participating merchant locations on Hillsborough Street and fill out a dedication plaque in honor of loved ones affected by cancer.

HSCSC is hosting the month’s activities in partnership with the Alexander Family YMCA, The BrickHouse Sports Pub, Melvin’s At The Alley, Hot Box Pizza, Porter’s Tavern and ColorGraphics.

The NC State Hoops 4 Hope game, presented by Rex Healthcare, will take place at Reynolds Coliseum with the Wolfpack women’s basketball game against Wake Forest University at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12. The Rex Mobile Mammography Unit will be on-site and well-known 2011 American Idol winner Scotty McCreery is scheduled to perform.
