Petersburg Solution Unveils Its Platform
1. Direct Election of the Mayor of Petersburg
As it stands, the city’s Mayor who is its chief representative is elected by Petersburg City Council. The person who makes the decisions for the city is the City Manager who is accountable only to City Council. Under a direct Mayoral election, the person making the city’s decisions would be the Mayor and they would be elected directly by the citizens. As it stands with the current Council-Mayor form of government, it has insulated Petersburg’s city leadership as a game of insider sports keeping citizens out of the equation. More accountability for leadership is needed. This will, however require a city charter change.
2. Expanding Public Transportation
Petersburg currently has a very limited public transportation system. While the city just added 7 new wifi-enabled buses, the need for expanded coverage is there as it is a barrier between connecting citizens to area employment and attractions. One of the key tenets of a thriving urban city is its public transportation. It encourages people to spend time in the city, especially younger people. Efforts to connect the city of Petersburg to neighboring jurisdictions would make the city more viable for its current destinations as well as attracting more.
3. Petersburg Parks and Recreation
A renewed focus on the City of Petersburg’s Parks and Recreation Department would help with a number of the city’s systemic issues. While a primary health clinic recently opened at the city’s high school, an active and available Parks and Recreation Department would give exercising opportunities to improve the city’s dismal health status. The same goes for providing youth with activities that would keep them from causing trouble.
4. Improved Marketing
The not so hidden elephant in the room is the bad reputation that precedes the City of Petersburg. From a largely silent cabal of city leadership that isn’t proactive in promoting the best parts of the city or what they’re doing to address its issues has caused a trickle down level of malaise that hovers over the city like a black cloud. By facilitating a positive public presentation of the city, it will show that Petersburg is in the game and capable of being a leading player in the region’s economy.
5. History Preservation
Petersburg is a city that is rich with history from The Petersburg National Battlefield to Pocahontas Island being the oldest black community in the country, Pamplin Park, the Nora Fontaine Davidson house which was the origin of Memorial Day, etc. There isn’t a reason Petersburg shouldn’t have the same traffic that other cities in Virginia with heavy civil war history have. This comes down to the reputation the city has and its effort or current lack thereof in putting its best foot forward to the world in showing its proud of its history. Pride in Petersburg’s history would result in leadership making sure the public is aware of it. This vacuum left regarding educating the public on Petersburg’s history is a void that Petersburg Solution is working to fill.
