MEDIA ADVISORY 1/28-29 104 Robotics Teams Compete to Qualify for Upcoming FIRST LEGO League Tourname

What: Due to the overwhelming growth of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) on Long Island, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) presents a two-day qualifying tournament for the FLL Championship Tournament, which will take place on March 4 at Longwood High School. This year, 104 FLL teams from Long Island have registered. Each registered team will compete during one of those two days, with 52 teams competing each day. If the team is successful, they will be one of 48 teams to advance to the FLL Championship Tournament.

Directions: From Eastern Long Island: Sunrise Highway (Rte. 27) West heading towards Massapequa. Make a U-turn at Unqua Road then make a slight right onto Rte. 27A East (Old Sunrise Highway). After 0.1 mile, turn right to continue onto Rte. 27A (Carman Mill Road). Stay on Carman Mill Road for 0.4 mile. School is on the left.
From Western Long Island, Queens and Manhattan: Take Sunrise Highway (Rte. 27) East towards Massapequa. Make a slight right onto Old Sunrise Highway (Rte. 27A). After 0.1 mile, turn right to stay on Rte. 27A (Carman Mill Rd.) School is on the left.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) was founded in 1984 by Fred Breithut with the goal of developing partnerships between local high schools and businesses that would provide students with practical experience and curriculum development, while helping the business community develop its future workforce. Over 100 partnerships have been formed. In 1999, SBPLI brought the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics program to Long Island, where 14 high school teams participated. Since then, the FIRST robotics program has grown to 50 teams, with over 2,000 students participating in FIRST Robotics and LEGO League programs on Long Island each year. The 2012 FIRST Robotics Competition will be held at Hofstra University on March 29-31, 2012.
