Berlin’s young Kunstmatrix is developing a virtual world

Berlin, January 16th, 2012 - An authentic, immediate, three-dimensional
exhibition experience in virtual space. For three years now, the young
Berlin-based company Kunstmatrix has been offering their vision of a
professional online presentation platform.

“Google Art Project or the VIP Art Fair show that the art world is slowly learning
that it pays to display art in high resolution and in 3D, and that the need for
professional presentation exists,” says Christoph Lauterbach, Kunstmatrix CEO.
“The exploration of the hardly developed Internet has finally begun.”

For visitors, Kunstmatrix offers a dynamic and location-independent access to
art. Rather than clicking through a collection of static photos of exhibition
pieces, they can move freely through a three-dimensional representation. They
can close in on the works of art, circle around sculptures and have an in-depth
experience of visual and aural installations and of their interaction with the
surrounding architecture.

Already, galleries like Michael Schultz and Nierendorf, auction houses like Hauff
& Auvermann and Bassenge and several artists are using their own virtual
spaces – as classic exhibition spaces, as archives, as three-dimensional art fair
stands or they use Kunstmatrix as a planning-software for real-life exhibitions.

In 2008, while still a student, Lauterbach created the novel Kunstmatrix
technology together with the architect Hartwig Bentele and the programmer
Kristian Hildebrand. Their goal was to give art lovers a realistic experience of art
in every respect. That same year, the young entrepreneurs won the German
Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology’s start-up competition, and in
2010 the Technische Universität Berlin’s start-up program awarded them the
quality label StarTUp.

“We are very happy to have founded our company in Berlin,” says Hartwig
Bentele. “Berlin’s art scene is unique in Germany, combining international artists
and young innovative galleries as well as established galleries with a long
history. In addition, a lot is happening with regard to digital technologies – it’s
the perfect environment for us to further and develop our future-oriented
project.”

Museum experts like Prof. Dr. Eugen Blume, director and curator of Berlin’s
Hamburger Bahnhof, or Dr. Jan Brockmann, former director of The National
Museum Of Contemporary Art in Oslo, appreciate the unique opportunities the
use Kunstmatrix offers them: “The Kunstmatrix opens up new and promising
possibilities for the virtual presentation of art,” says Brockmann.
