Rapid Implementation of VR at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Press release from: Accelerate Associates

TalkingPoint for Pathology, GHG Software’s specialist pathology VR workflow system that has now been implemented at 13 NHS acute Trusts, has been implemented within 6 weeks at the Blackpool Victoria NHS Hospital, Pathology Department, to meet the immediate needs of the healthcare environment and help improve the efficiency of the reporting system.

Standon, Staffordshire, January 10, 2012 -- Following a staff consultation period, 50% of the medical secretaries within the department sought voluntary redundancy; as a result, the hospital needed to implement an alternative, efficient and speedy solution. The management team analysed the workflows and work processes involved in the reporting process and saw that cost and time savings could also be improved upon. Voice Recognition was identified as the ideal solution and with TalkingPoint’s proven and flexible VR workflow solution and GHG’s extensive experience in Pathology at other Trusts, GHG were charged with the task of getting the system tailored, implemented and productive within a six week period.

Following a site visit to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trusts’ (UHMB) Lancaster Royal Infirmary, the Blackpool team could see the benefits first hand. Just three months on from the implementation, the advantages are being realised at Blackpool. Commenting on the IT integration, Phil Houldsworth, Pathology, Laboratory Operations Manager at Blackpool Victoria Hospital said: “I would say reporting time using TalkingPoint is down by as much as 25%, if not more in some cases. This is a significant benefit for the patient, getting results and treatments faster, and for the hospital in the form of greater efficiencies”.

As a consequence of this implementation, TalkingPoint VR has been introduced into Occupational Health and Human Resources and other departments are looking to follow. Adding to this Jim Johnston, Consultant Histopathologist at Blackpool said: “Voice Recognition has provided us with instant benefits and there is huge potential for us across the Trust using TalkingPoint. It has certainly revolutionised the way I do pathology, and I have been doing it for a long time. Despite there being some resistance to technological advancements in our sector, I see voice recognition as the future”.
