UV Inkjet Ink: New Types and Features
UV ink will cure under UV light in a matter of seconds. Curing is the process in which a chemical reaction occurs in the ink (in this case due to UV light) where the molecules realign and the bond to the substrate strengthens to the point where it is scratch proof and cannot be easily removed. The UV ink needs direct UV light for curing, exposure times can vary but the typical length of an exposure is only a matter of seconds.

Exposing a substrate under UV light can pose a small threat if that material is heat sensitive. Prior to the development of an LED UV inkjet ink, some manufacturers were unable to be print on particular substrates because they were extremely sensitive to heat even if it was exposed for only a matter of seconds. LED UV light will not give off any heat and the temperature of the substrate will remain constant. Curing by LED light is just as effective as UV light. This recent development of an LED UV ink now allows for inkjet printing on a much wider array of substrates.
Additional recent developments to UV Inkjet ink include the development of a flexible UV ink. Prior to the development of a flexible ink, UV inkjet ink was able to be used only on hard substrates because if the ink was to bend, it would begin to crack. Much like the development of an LED UV ink, the development of a flexible ink greatly expands the amount of substrates available to print on.
