A mail bomb delivered to Deutsche Bank in Germany raises concerns among New York City banks

A fully functional letter bomb with the return address of the European Central Bank (increasing the chance of being opened) was sent to Deutsche Bank CEO Dr. Josef Ackermann. The NYPD is now warning New York City banks, especially Deutsche Bank’s New York headquarters on 60 Wall Street, to concentrate their security efforts on mailrooms and are “advised to take precautions” and be “extra careful”.

“The FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force is now working with German authorities to assess the incident in Frankfurt and any potential threat to facilities or people here,” said James Margolin, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York.

The letter bomb, which police eventually defused and consisted of explosives and shrapnel, was detected in the mailroom of Deutsche Bank’s headquarters by routine X-ray screening. The mail bomb did not detonate and no one was injured. The investigation is ongoing and there has been no immediate word on what individual or group has sent the mail bomb.

On December 1, SafeMail New York announced the opening of the only offsite, airtight facility in the New York region with the detection technology capable of screening mail pieces for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) threats before they penetrate one’s facility. Housing the mail screening shelter offsite eliminates the possibility of evacuation or harm to a company’s personnel, visitors or facility. In the case of Deutsche Bank, the letter bomb would never have reached the mailroom. More information is available by contacting:
